Default Dealing with discrimination?

How do you deal with people who are just not realizing they are making discriminating and racist remarks? It's like some people are so clouded by their own personal views that you can tell they are borderline racist or a closet-case racist.

I have a coworker and any mention of an African American and he goes off on a rant about how "those people" are. Or mention someone homosexual and he will tell you how they are ruining America. Or mention the Middle East or Muslims and he goes off on a rant how they are crazy people. Which is weird because he is Iranian and was born there and raised Muslim.

So how do you deal with people like that? People who are so narrowly focused? The scary thing is what do you do when you know several people like that?

Mods, if this is too edgy feel free to close.

Flat out tell them, "Stop being racist, this is America".

Always works.

I've tried telling him that there's freedom of speech and expression then he tells me there isn't because they don't teach religion in public school. I told him what does it matter you home school your children, then he said well I wanted them to goto public school. Then he went off on a rant about how they teach kids in school how to be Muslim and I asked him really? I don't remember that. He said it's because they allow Muslim kids to pray in school. I told him that's so we don't discriminate against them.

I really don't understand his thinking.

You can't change who they are. If possible I would avoid those type of people, but for your situation he's your co-worker so that's hard.

For people that I avoid at work.. I simply don't make eye contact. LOL.

The thing is he's a great guy at the same time as long as you don't bring up those topics. But any mention of anything along those lines and he goes off ranting again.

Yep, Floyd. Because he's scared to fight Pacquiao.

Back on topic. I think it also has to do with the area I work in, Orange County in California is very, well, segregated. I can't think of any other word to describe it. Let's just say being Filipino I wouldn't be comfortable living here.

Well, it's annoying when people I don't know say chinese dude, when clearly chinese people look a lot different than filipino.

The Northside in Jax that's where LeAnn lives. That's the country side of town, and she would tell me to never get out of my car because they would treat me differently.

I was born & raised in Multi-Cultural Holland, lived there for 22 years. I moved to small town, rural Texas (La Grange area) Dec '07. After living and working here for more than 2 years, i can honestly say that 90% of the people in this town are racist. Whether it be Mexicans or African Americans, according to the "Decent Church Going White Folk", they're all lazy criminals who don't work, live off the benefits of the government and "breed like rats". I married a Texas girl, she's 23 now and has never shared these views with the majority of her family. It's good to see that the new generations are open minded enough to realize racism is bullshit. It's a shame to see this generation suppressed by single minded parents whom are often "radical catholics" and want "the best for their children"...yet they leave their children no choice but to follow their lead. Because we all know, "what "Decent Church Going White Folk" thinks is always best". Anyway, i think the people here are stuck in the 60's and oughta be slapped around so they wake up.

Oh, and i'm a white guy btw, so it's not like it insults me directly. I just have a hard time dealing with narrow minded, obtuse people who choose to "hate" or "dislike" anything and everything that's different from what they think is right. But, i guess we should feel sorry for them, considering this is most likely a way to make themselves feel better about their own miserable lives.

You can get out of your car. geez MaCruz.
But yea, expect to be treated differently on my side of town, mainly by the younger kids. Most of the adults are not really going to care. But on my side of town, it was hard enough to be half asian. The first African American family that moved in got run out because people would throw trash in their yard, beat up their mailbox etc.

And FYI MaCruz, not all Chinese people look a lot different than Filipinos. You didn't even know I was mixed, and you looked Mexican when I first met you. so hah.

As far as the narrow-mindedness of others, I have some co-workers who are seriously anti-gay, and I didn't want to talk about it because it is a super sensitive topic and I am ok with it and clearly they were not. But they got on this huge rant about how it was so wrong. So I just waited for them to calm down and tried to shift the topic.

It is sad that we judge others so harshly, but really on many things I would tend to say it is an over generalization based on experience which only reinforces the negative aspects of a person and clouds the positives.

This is where I gave up. I seriously doubt even you believe 90% of your town is racist. Sounds like your "issues" with religion may be clouding your judgement.

I have no "issues" with religion. I am merely pointing out that that's what they call themselves, and yet they discriminate people who do not fit in their "standards". You don't find that hypocritical? And yeah, when i say 90%, i mean 90%.

This entire thread is a slippery slope....... I'm torn..... but will say this....

"please don't site examples"

And for the OP..... I don't say anything..... not saying that's what you should do, but I'm a pretty "Non-confrontational" kinda guy..... a guy making jokes is one thing, a guy who hasn't evolved beyond his redneck upbringing is another.

All I can say, try to avoid him if possible. I know that he would make me feel very uncomfortable personaly. If I could not make him see that well I would do my best to just avoid contact with him as much as it would be possible since it's a co-worker.

life is too short to waste it worrying about douchebags, maaannnn.

be around positive people as much as possible and worry about yourself. this guy(and people like him) is clearly not worth it and is not worth your time worrying about what you can do about him/them. Just ignore him and move on with your day.

If he keeps talking to you about it while thinking "hey I think mikejet agrees or thinks like me so it's cool for me to unload my own issues on him" then just tell him " dude, stfu please with the random racist remarks and leave me the **** alone. thanks."

Everyone works with people they do not like or do not agree with, some people might even think that way about you!(shocking, I know)

the world is filled with more douches than cool people, probably like 87.5%+ of the world is a douchefest full of epic douchenozzles. they are in every country and area/neighborhood.

You're best bet is to just ignore him when he goes on his rants. I know a few people with the same mindset when it comes to other races/religions and they are not going to change any time soon. You really can't expect to change this guys's view on others, so just ignore it.

Lol I really thought it was LL Cool J !

Mike maybe you could go into work each day dressed in a different costume that relates to all the different stereotypes that he blatantly despises ?

I'm thinking maybe some flowing african robes one day, and the next maybe a boob tube and hotpants ?

Go on, rub his face in it.
