Default Living Room/Theater

Have a converted garage that currently has a 50" Samsung DLP. Wanting to go with a projector. But also this is our daily living room and I can't have a fixed screen. Going to replace the DLP with a LCD/Plasma, for TV watching and have a screen pull down in front of it for movies and such. Going to build a cabinet to have the screen be flush or slightly behind the wall. Looking at around a 110" diagonal screen(at least). The cabinet is going to be 110" tall x 128" wide x 12-18" deep(can go a tad deeper if necessary). The room is 24 x 22. From the proposed screen position to the proposed projector position is 20'. Hoping to have center of screen be 4' 6" (54") from floor. Looking for projector and general recommendations for setup. Not sure of budget yet, For sure nothing god awful expensive. Would love to stay under 2K, looking for a 1080p projector.

Here are pics of the proposed setup:

Projector location(farthest to top) - Bottom is a gas log fireplace, the middle is a nick nak shelf.

Looking at this with a throw of 21' gives me a screen of 100" x 56"with a diagonal of 115", 1.0 screen. What I am wondering its showing a 1.14x zoom. and on the specs for that projector it says Throw Dist (feet) : 6.2 - 19.7. Will going outside this range hurt the image quality?

Edit:

If I go to a 1.23x zoom I can get a 120" image from 20'3" throw distance.

I'm getting more confused by the minute.

Edit 2:
proposed projector location puts center of projector 21" above top of screen and 42" above center of screen.

Am I going to need to come up with another location for projector or will that work.

Need a TV in the room for everyday TV viewing. I can't have a fixed screen for the projector and don't want the screen seen at all when not in use.

Not really wanting something like this visible all the time

If I mounted that in the upper portion of the "wall unit" when it was not in use it would not be seen for the most part.

ok. sure, i guess some would not want to see the screen case.

before i got my projector, i thought i wouldn't want to see a BIG white glob on my wall. but now, i think it looks darned cool. and the black case blends right in with the black felt on the ceiling . all together =

Here is another option.

May be a cheaper, more viable option. Wondering how good a pull down screen is when just hanging there. Do they sway if 6-12 inches from wall?

Are you referring to the T90e's or the HTiaB ones.

Cause I still have the T90e's. Haven't even had them a year yet. And monitor 30's for the surrounds.

How tall are your ceilings? and how far from the wall is your screen? I was thinking that 16-18" would be too far to have the screen off the wall, but after looking at your setup, maybe not. I am afraid it may look out of place.

If I can avoid having to buy another TV + Projector I would be thrilled. My current TV is 16" from wall and 23 1/2" from the ground, center of TV is around 42-43" from ground.

How long are the pull down screens? The viewable area plus extra for more of a drop for viewing position?

i like that setup much better. but i am not you.

all roll up screens, except tension, get waves. so i advise getting a Da-Lite HP (or tension). these also get "waves". but the thing is, the way the material is, you can't see the waves with a movie on. and probably with the pj off.

i have not heard of them swaying. but, as always, YMMV. my HVAC return is right behind mine, and it doesn't noticably sway, but i never looked to see if it does, i just can't see that it does.

8', + i have "treatments" that are about 4" lower. it is about 1' from the wall. i don't think i would go out further than that. especially in your room = open sides. and for you, i think 6" is about max.
hang the tv on the wall, screen down over it. thats the ticket.
edit : just noticed you have a dlp. so, either get a flat. or mount the screen out more and live with what you have till you upgrade.

in your gallery, all i see is the HTiaB, and the bigger center. how about new pics with the polks.

my screen has a standard 3"ish "drop", then the screen surface, then about 3"ish bottom . 2" sides. but you can get any "drop" you want, for extra $$

Hi..hope I'm not thread hijacking.

I use my living room as a home theater and here is my VERY humble setup.

I have a Moviemate 72 HiDef All in One projector. Dont have a suround system hooked up yet, but my powered subwoofer is rocking the house with the built in speakers! I have a Sony Blu Ray upconverting player hooked up via HDMI. I sit about 14 feet away and I usually throw a 120 to 125 inch image ON MY WALL. The image you see is a paused from a trailer for Spartacus: Blood and Sand. Its VERY bright in my living roomn at the time of the pic - 11am, but as you can see its still a nice image and watchable without me securing my curtains all the way!

Nice start, you really should look at reducing reflections (darker coloured walls, and black around the screen).
