Default Not happy with new Purchase

So, I bought the Polk RM510 from newegg that is the RM85 + PSW110 combo.

I'm not happy with the way they sound at all. The voices/dialog sound like it comes from a dull tin can and the bass from the sub is muddy and boomy.

I like the sound from my Old Sony HTiB speakers better. They are 6 ohm and I'm not sure I should use them with the Sony STR-DH800 I bought to go with the Polks.

Anyway, it’s going to cost me a $75.00 dollar restocking fee + shipping to send them back. I knew about the fee and was hesitant to order, but took the chance. This time it cost me.

Most satellite systems like that aren't worth the box they came in. You're almost always better off just spending a little extra and getting it piece by piece.

I would call Newegg and explain your complaint about the sound you are getting from the speakers. Newegg has great customer service and they may not charge you a restocking fee.

I rarely have returned anything to newegg, but at the times I did, I was not charged a restocking fee and they also gave me credit for the delivery charges.

The 6ohm is fine and shouldn't hurt your new receiver.

go to a store next time and try to audition them yourself. speakers can sound different to each individual, some may like a certain sound, others not.

+1. I hate to state the obvious, but you should never blind buy speakers, no matter how good the deal seems to be. If you end up disliking the sound, they will act like nails grating on a chalkboard.

Yep, I totally knew better. I took the chance and lost.

anyway, I auditioned and bought a Polk DSW Pro 400 locally today. seems to be doing very well so far.

I wouldn't say that. I would agree with you if you were just talking about plain HTIB's, but satellite systems can be good. My speaker system is a HTIB, minus the receiver. Let's just say it sounds better than any Bose system you can get for 3x the price of my system.

To the original poster, did you try different settings on your receiver? Maybe you have it on Hall or some other music setting that's giving you that tin can sound. As for the sub, did you fiddle with the crossover settings at all on your receiver?

Sorry hamp, i dont think that the receiver can handle 6ohms tho, per their website specs found here, double checked it to make sure its not a typo... found also here

I think everyone hit the nail on that comment about speakers, unless you are familiar with the line or the brand you are buying, then id decline no matter what cost you can have em at. Sorry you had to be inconvenienced for this.

I would read this.

http://www.audioholics.com/education...r-or-amplifier

I have never had an issue driving 6ohm speakers with my Yamaha V663 or my Sony STR-DG920. The only thing you might lose is headroom.

aha! a great reference to the audioholics AV university...

id love to consider this as a good option for him, but i also am weary to suggest this unless he is a intermediate level enthusiast. we should have a disclaimer if ever we did outright...

I tweaked the heck out of it.

I used DVD essentials to make sure polarity, etc was correct. The receiver was decoding the lossless formats. I was using the LFE inputs/outputs and chased the AVR's crossover from 100-130 Hz. I could get them to blend, but the tone was way off. It was bad, kind of like the drive-in theater speakers but with allot of bass.

Finally I hooked my cheapo HiTB satellites back up and I was shocked that I had recovered all tonal quality.

l'll find something better eventually, but really not in a hurry now that I have a sub that works.

I have a set of Cerwin Vega AT-15's on my living room sound system. If my "game/movie/den" room was bigger I'd be using those.

I'm surprised you stuck with Polk after your initial experience. What made you choose Polk again?

ya know I was kind of leary this time out.

I had zero'd in on the Velodyne DLS-3500R. the DSW PRO 400 and the Boston Accoustics sub10 were my back up choices. the pro sounded a little better in the show room. it has higher power amp and bottom end is slightly lower then the other two.

Any speaker requires time to break-in.

That being said, it sounds like you might have a phase issue. One or more than one speaker might have the polarity internal wired wrong, causing the speakers to be out of phase.

Sure, but usually break-in doesn't turn a crappy sounding speaker into a pleasant sounding one.

Possibly ... I think I'm much happier with the TSi 100 and CS20 then I ever would have been with anything from the RM line up. I'm on the hunt for 3 small quality speakers to use for the rear surround. I need something approx 6" deep and will blend well with the front.
