Talking Graphic Novel Film Adaptations

I know that 85% of the readers here, grew up on these 'graphics novels' and everytime a new movie is announced to be adapted from one, it seems like every single person here but me knows about them lol. So out of curiousity what graphic novels are left that you people think would make excellent films?

I don't know if this is what you're looking for, but I would like to see Batman's The Killing Joke or The Dark Knight Returns.

Yeah I'm not looking for any specific answers, I'm just curious as to if there is a general consensus among comic fans of what they think would make the absolute best film adaptations.

Outside of the superhero realm, almost anything published by Vertigo would make for a compelling film, in my opinion. Brian Wood's DMZ or Northlanders series being my favorites. Other greats would be Unknown Soldier, 100 Bullets, or Y: The Last Man (which they're supposed to be working on).

Back in the superhero world, I'm still convinced Ed Brubaker and Greg Rucka's Gotham Central books would make for a kickass television show. It would essentially just be a cop show, with appearances from Batman villains, and even Batman himself, but he's definitely not the central character.

Neil Gaman's Sandman.

It would be impossible to film though.

One of my all time favorites is Garth Ennis Preacher series..I would love to see this as a trilogy of movies or even a TV series on one of the cable network..another would be Powers...which the OP mention about the other day and which I hope is true...Astro City would also make a good series on TV...

For super heroes...The Killing Joke, Marvels and one of the best ...Kingdom Come(wishful thinking).

I think anything by Gaiman..the Sandman series or Death series...

Sam Mended was supposed to be working on a television adaptation of The Preacher, but wasn't he just signed on to do the next Bond? If so, it might not happen anytime soon.

I remember way back when they said they where making Preacher with James Marsden and than it was a definite go for HBO and it just never seemed to material. From what I read that always seemed like it would have been hellacious fun to watch.

I would like to see The Question turned into either a film or TV series on a cable network.

The Question is a sort of detective with a blend of philosphy and martial arts. Can make for an interesting read.

Ah, I wasn't sure because it's another Batman. I thought you might be looking for a graphic novel not pertaining to any big heroes such as Batman, Captain America, etc.

I think that was the best shot for a quality Preacher conversion. It got canned when new executives came on board at HBO.

Oh no, I'm not really looking to start reading comics now. I figure at 24, I missed the boat in the comics department, If I was gonna start it would of been when I was a kid. I was just curious about what popular properties among fans, where still yet undiscovered.

I can honestly tell you that it's not too late to start reading comics. I'm 27 now and started reading a few years ago, so it would've been at the same age as you.

I'm a DC fan, and it's a little daunting trying to catch up and keep up with what's going on in the DC universe (there are just soooo many books to buy), but it's fun. Not to mention, getting into books published by Image, Vertigo, Icon, IDW, etc. are great because they're all pretty much brand new series, requiring no prior knowledge.

Unless you're just referring to the fact that you're not interested in comics, which is reasonable.

I started reading comics around that age as well. Check out the Darkhorse Conan series.

I agree. It's never too late to read comics. I read them when I was younger and only recently began to read them again. There are plenty of good ones that have been created now too.

I don't know, I just never had an interest in reading comics really. I love reading, I read a lot of books, but I just never could stick with comics, I tried a few times when I was much younger and found myself bored by about the 5th page of everything, I also for some reason get migrains when reading comics, not sure what that is about.

Pet Peeves:
1) referring to works originally published as comic books as "graphic novels". A graphic novel is a work in very similar medium that originally appears in one volume. A series of comic books bundled together in longer form is a trade paperback. I wish people would not be so scared of the term comic book.

2) No such thing as being too old for comic books. Much like animation, this is an art form, not a genre, and it's not limited to "kids". In fact there is a lot of comic book content that is specifically not kid friendly.

Topic at hand:
I don't think Sandman is unfilmable, but I'd rather see it as an HBO or Showtime series of 75 episodes. They could run them in pods or seasons associated with each individual arc.
I'd love to see a Lucifer follow up series.

I think "POWERS" or "ALIAS" by Bendis would be good.
I think the entire Valiant line is ripe for adaptation, if anyone remembers that. Harbinger in particular would make an excellent TV series.

There was a tongue in cheek spy series called Codename:Knockout that I think would make a fun film series.
