Default Blu-ray on 720p?

I have a Samsung hpt4254 42' plasma 720p. Is there a big diffrence between blue ray disc and dvd, if i dont have a 1080p t.v? I have a good hdmi cord and ps3 with blue ray disc's, but was wondering becuase i have a 720p tv is it still a signifigant diffrence? The reason why i am asking is becuase i dont have a regular dvd player with the the 720p upgrade to see the diffrence. All i have is blue ray?
