Copenhagen - US film director Martin Scorcese's landmark film Taxi Driver may be in for a remake together with his Danish colleague Lars von Trier, a leading film magazine reported Sunday. The Copenhagen film magazine Ekko, reporting from the Berlin Film Festival where both Scorcese and von Trier are in attendance, said the two men had discussed the possibility of a remake.

Ekko said that as in the classic 1976 film, the lead role would be played again by Robert de Niro, 66.

In an initial reaction, von Trier's partner at the Zentropa film production company, Peter Aalbek, would "neither confirm nor deny" the report, but did say an official announcement would be made soon.

Scorcese, 67, is in Berlin for the world premiere of his new psychothriller, Shutter Island.

Von Trier, 53, had previously done a remake in 2003 of the short film The Perfect Human by Danish filmmaker Jorgen Leth, introducing a number of surprising new elements.

Taxi Driver was a sensation at the time, playing in crime-ridden New York City of the 1970s, with de Niro playing the title role of a man who decides to take the law into his own hands against criminals.
