According to saveonsamsung.com it is only a blu ray player, according to samsung.com it doesn't come with any blu ray device your best bet is an external burner unless you can find a burner that is interchangable with your existing drive. Someone else here might be able to point you in th right direction for a suitable model

is there no way i can change it into a writer by software like updating firmware or something like that, the whole reason is, i was going to buy an external hard drive, but then i thought if i had loads of data on it and something went wrong with the hard drive i would loose everything where as if it was on 50gig blu ray disks i wouldnt, any advice please?

Two things.

Absolutely impossible to turn a reader into a writer; bit of a silly question.

Using blu ray disks for backing up data is extremely inefficient. Firstly, the cost of purchasing a burner and disks exceeds the cost of buying 2/3 1TB HDDs, which gives you enormous backup capacity and redundancy. Secondly, its impossible to alter information on a blu ray disk, which means if you want to change anything at all, you have to either reburn or write another blu ray, which is very time consuming and costly. Thirdly, blu rays are not as ubiquitous as HDDs which use sata/usb connections, so accessing saved information is not as quick or easy.

In summary, do not go down the path of using blu rays as back up.

EDIT: I would strongly recommend doing thorough research before spending your cash, as you can prevent buying readers when you meant to buy writers, and pursuing flawed back up methods.

Hi, I'm new. I have a Slimtype BD E DS4E1s drive too but I can't play Blu-Ray discs - because my OS (WinXP) says the best driver is the system driver, which is not Blu-Ray. Could you tell me what driver you are using please? Or could someone advise on where I could obtain a suitable driver for this drive?
Thanks.

Are you trying to play Blu-ray movies or read Blu-ray data discs?
