from what I remember most of the Chaplin films were heavily damaged in storage over the years and most of the DVD re-releases had shorter cut scenes because the film was too wrecked when they found and restored the transfers.

still it would be nice to bring back the chaplin films in High Def (if they can find a decent or bareable transfer) BRING ON THE GRAIN

From what I understand the Chaplin films being held in the Roy Export Company archives were heavily damaged. The reason the DVD box sets took so long to produce is that they were re-mastered from Chaplin's personal archives in the family home in Vevey. It took a while for these prints to be released to MK2.

These prints were only played by the Chaplin family and are excellent quality. Which is why the DVD versions are excellent. It might take them a while to re-master all films to HD, unless they did it when the DVD masters were taken.

I am hopeful that the DVD box sets will be simply re-released at 1080p from an HD master. I would have thought that MK2 would have mastered the DVD versions in HD originally for future planning.

On a side-note: I was flicking through a magazine last year and saw a full A4 page advert for the Chaplin Collection coming to Blu-Ray and a picture of the box. It must have been about a year ago...watch this space?

Chaplin films have been announced for May 6th in Germany. We should be getting them too later this year.
