Robert Rodriguez's Nevercrackers
Hey,
Another Robert Rodriguez attempt at Science Fiction. Nevercrackers originally announced in 2009 in collaboration with Weinstien Company. Two problems took place:
- Weinstien Company is out of the picture.
- Rodriguez haven't found an actor for the part as of yet.
Now Rodriguez was ready to go but lost his lead actor.

Quote:
In early 2009, just over a year ago, it was officially announced by The Weinstein Company that filmmaker Robert Rodriguez would be working on a brand new science fiction movie called Nerverackers. It was exciting news because we were all hoping this would be Rodriguez' return to gritty, intense action movies since its been a while (Planet Terror was in 2007, Sin City was in 2005). Unfortunately the project never actually got off the ground, but as we now hear today via The Playlist, Rodriguez was actually ready to go, but lost his lead actor, so he's waiting for his schedule to open up before they pick up where they left off.
These new quotes from Rodriguez come from the latest print edition of Empire magazine, but The Playlist got their hands on it early and have been putting them online for us to read. Here's how Rodriguez explains what happened to Nerverackers last year and why they're still waiting to continue on with it at some point.
"I hate to pit all my energy into a project and then find out an actor's not available and have to start over. 'Nerverackers' was all ready to go, down to the costumes — I'm actually wearing the hero's jacket right now — but the [actor] I had in mind got booked so we're waiting for him. And in the meantime, I've got ideas on how to improve it. We try to hit every project a little bit every day."
Before we continue with his other projects, let's recap on Nerverackers, what little we know about it (read here for more). Set in the year 2085, Nerverackers and centers on the character Joe Tezca, part of an elite unit who is sent in to stop a crime wave amongst a perfect futuristic society. In the process, he discovers that Nerverackers are on a rampage for control of the city. Tezca consequently sets forth on a mission to reveal the cover up by the ruling class and stop the Nerverackers before time runs out. It seems like a cool project and I'd love to one day see it, even if it's not for another 10 years (but hopefully it won't take that long).
When asked about if they're still doing Sin City 2 soon, Rodriguez said simply "maybe." But what else does he got on his plate? How about that live-action version of The Jetsons that he was attached to at one point. Rodriguez also talks briefly about that project, but doesn't say much that we didn't already know about it.
"There was one point where The Jetsons was in place here… That would have been a much bigger project then we’ve ever done; you'd have to create a whole world from scratch. Right now it's not in the cards. What we're good at is keeping the budget low, by cutting out the paper work and keeping the effects in house."
I'm not sure if they're really that "good" at that, but then again I never see his kids movie Shorts so I can't really speak to the effects and budgetary concerns on that one. I do like Rodriguez a lot but I've been waiting for him to really take on another good project that isn't eventually handed over to someone else to direct or another damn kids movie - which is exactly why I was so excited for Nerverackers when it was announced. Alas, it looks like we're going to have to keep waiting for it, but maybe Rodriguez has other projects we can look forward to? He's already got Machete and Predators coming up, but he didn't direct either of those.

Enjoy.
