Default My Onkyo TX-SR 805 is on its way

I finally found a retailer that sells the Onkyo 805 in Canada. And I had to wait over a week for them to ship. It would seem it's in high demand and they sold more than they had in stock. But it is now finally on it's way and I can't wait for it to arrive.

This would be my very first receiver ever. Now just have to wait for a Blu-Ray player that "bitstreams" DTS-HD MA.

I'll let you know more once I receive it.

I just bought this receiver on Saturday, and well....Damn. This is one nice receiver, only thing I have to be careful of is its gets HOT. The type of table/ av stand I have my tv, receiver, blu-ray player etc on is glass so it really reflects the heat. Im considering getting a fan/blower for it. You want be dissapointed tho. I love it.

Yeah, this is not one of those receivers you can't put your Comcast Cable box ontop ..... It does get hot. Just make sure you follow the manual instructions as far as air circulation is concerned.

Congrats with your purchase by the way. you won't regret it. This is an awesome receiver.

Onkyo's big brother TX-NR905.... 140wpc.... HQV Reon VX video processing, 4 HDMI in, 2 out. Toroidal power transformer, separate transformers for audio and video. Upscaling to 1080P (not all Onkyos can go to 1080P). 100MHz component video switching. THX Ultra2 certified. $2099 USD. Wt... 54lbs

TX-SR875. 140wpc, HQV Reon VX processing, 4 hdmi in, 1 out. Upscaling to 1080P, 100MHz component video switching. THX Ultra2 certified. THX Ultra2 certified. $1899 (I think)... Wt 51 lbs.

I think the Onkyos are superior to the upcoming Denon receivers, which are a lot lighter (smaller transformers probably) and only user the Faroudja DCDi video processor, not as good as the HQVs.....

The only drawback to the Onkyo is that their GUI appears to be a bit clunky compared to the Denons.

I have TX-NR905 on pre-order.

As far as GUI is concerned. It's a set it and forget it formality. As soon as you tweak it and get it all dialed in you will not use the OSD.

I could care less about who has the sexy GUI. I would rather have energy and resources dedicated to sound and video processing.

They have always had a pretty archaic GUI and menu system. However on their new receivers is a lot better than models past.

The newer receivers have a menu that pops-up on your TV in which you can configure the various settings. That is what they mean with GUI. This unlike the older receivers where the only feedback you got was via it's LED display.

Is it really GUI if there are no grapics just text? I'd say its just UI in that case. It is more typically refered to as OSD - which stands for On Screen Display. I heard that the Sony ES receivers have a true OSD GUI.

PS Warren, if a word or term baffles you...go to Google.com and type "define:" (minus quotes) followed by whatever word or term you are looking for in the search field. EX: define: GUI

You are right; it really isn't much of a GUI. Just OSD. Poteto, Potato

I think the new Denon's have a graphical user interface. I thought I had seen a picture of the GUI that showed a model room with the speakers placed around the room.

You're welcome.

Good news. My receiver is arriving today. Now that's speedy delivery! It's arriving at the same time as some speaker cables I had ordered.....talk about timing. It is all coming together. In the words of Mr. Burns: "Excellent".

As it is, I am calling in sick from work Just hope my supervisor doesn't come around here lol

Congrats on the purchase and definitely give us your thoughts on it once it's up and running. Looking to buy one in a couple of weeks myself.

The 605, 705 and 805 only upscale to 720p. A 1080p feed to the Onkyo will pass through unaltered and will stay at 1080p.
