I finally sold my Denon 2807 and I'm going to get a new receiver this weekend I'm torn between the Denon 3808 CI which I can get a at Best Buy for $900 which is a floor model or a Sony 4400ES at work for $535 I really love the sound of both and have been a fan of Denon for years but for the price of the Sony I can't beat that so my question if any body has had experience with the Sony ES line please let me know what you think of it and the Denon 3808 as well any input would help Thanks.

I have the 920 which is basically the 2400ES minus the pre-outs and a few other connections and upgraded GUI and i really like it, easy to use, sounds great. My dad has a 5200ES and it powers his B&W speakers just great.
In a popularity contest everyone will say get the Denon because so many people loath Sony, but I have had no issues and they sound a little similar to me. I think either way you will get a great Receiver. |

Sony has the easiest plug and play, setup system out there, IMO. I know what you mean about the Denons, my dad and I helped my older brother and it was not easy. But yes Sonys are easy to setup. They have pretty good functionality to and lots of features. Perhaps not as good of an amp, but with your speakers you wont have any problems. If you get into 4 ohm speaker then buy an amp, but it'll power 8 and 6 ohm speaker very well. As I said, I power my Energys and my Dad powers his B&Ws.

Phish,
First I want you to understand that I am not a Fanboy of Sony. And... ...in the intrest of full disclosure, if you get into towers that are 6 or 4 ohm speakers, typically they are more power hungry and your potentially new Sony would greatly benefit from an external amp, as would the Denon, however I have talked with people that have used Denons to power 4 ohm speakers w/o issue, however, I wouldn't personally do the same with the Sony receiver. Most speakers the average person would buy are 8 and 6 ohm rated and either receiver would do fine, however for better sound an Amp would always be suggested irregardless of your receiver brand and/or speaker ohm rating. So wether you get the Denon or Sony, if you get B&W 600, Def Tech BP, PSB, Paradigm, Dynaudio, Energy, etc. series towers, an amp would always be recommended. Any receiver you get has more duties to perform then just powering speakers, therefore an amp which is only powering speakers is always suggested. |
