Ok so I cant say I have seen a full episode of either show in HD but there was I was watching ABC in hd last night and there was a commercial for macys.
There were a bunch of different tv show/movie clips talking about Macys and they show I Love Lucy and Seinfeld each as one of those shows. I couldnt believe how good each show looked. The only problem as discussed by other board members if they do get bluray releases you could clearly see in the clips for those shows the top was cut off. But still I think they both looked great and I hope that they both get bluray releases or should I just pick up I LOVE LUCY on dvd? Just though I would let you guys know. |

Now, I've seen Seinfeld on TBS HD in both crystal clear 16:9 and shoddy 4:3, so I assume certain episodes or (most likely) older episodes have either not been upscaled or were filmed in a different way. I think there was a thread a couple of weeks back that covered this.

Sadly the online Blu ray reviewers seem to be giving this "cropping" practice a free pass (as happened with Lonesome Dove- nary a negative comment). I don't know what gives there... They would be slamming it if it happened with widescreen movies. IMO consumers should at the very least be given BOTH options.

Case in point is the V miniseries. When they released it on DVD, people complained that it was chopped to make it 16:9. The director/creator said that it was shot 16:9 because there had been plans to release it as a movie in Europe. |

Being a hardcore Seinfeld fan I will never buy it on Blu unless its the original uncropped. 16:9 is Disgusting.

SyFy-HD showed V: The Final Battle this week in 4x3. Looked pretty darn good. Quote:
Apparently people have done comparisons, some top & bottom cropped, but more shown at the sides. Hogan's Heroes on HDNet looks like it was filmed 16x9 from the beginning. Last edited by PeterTHX; 02-18-2010 at 02:16 PM. |

All films shot in the 1.85 ratio are shot in 4:3, then the top and bottom are cropped by the projector, thus creating the 1.85:1 ratio. If you watch Seinfeld in it's 4:3 versions, you will notice a substantial amount of room between the top of the character's head and the top of the frame. That is the area that was intended to be cropped in the future (i.e. whenever widescreen sets become the norm, like now) People should be praising the 16x9 versions, but since your average Joe doesn't know about 35mm film and cropping, people think the image is being mutilated. It is not. Try watching a 16x9 Seinfeld and tell me if any important picture info is missing. I can tell you, the new framing is correct. seinfeld16x9vs4x3qr5.jpg Plus, the 16X9 versions reveal more side info from the camera negative then the "original" 4:3 versions show. Shooting with 16:9 in mind was a way of future-proofing the show for syndication. And yes, even though they were a rarity, 16:9 TVs did exist back in the early '90s. Look at the screencap comparison of Seinfeld above. The rule of thirds is replicated in the new frame and the majority of lost material from the shot is in the stool and countertop. As far as I'm concerned, the 16:9 Seinfeld is probably as unnoticeably "cropped" as any film which was shot open matte in full frame but presented in widescreen theatrically. And what's this about I Love Lucy? Has it been remastered? |
