Default Speaker suggestions

This is for my father who is not a picky person but wants surround sound now. Which one would you go with? I'm giving him an Energy sub (ESW-10). Working with a small budget.

Erict,

I think option 2 because they all have the same matching tweeter size, and driver size so they should match up well together. That would be my #1 I would say, not to mention the Bookshelfs and the Center on that option have a better frequency response so you can crossover at 80 hz still and keep the bass from localizing.

I'm going to agree with callas01 here. I would think you'll get better imaging from choice 2.

Option 2 is your best option and is most definitely a higher end speaker than option 1 even if they are bookshelves with 4 inch drivers.

I heard both option 1 and 2 and they are much better quality speaker than option 1.

Option 3 is a nice Energy HTIB but will not come close to those Jamo bookshelves and because option 2 has a frequency response of 70hz up you can use the 80hz X-over point often looked for in HT setups.

Callas01 makes a good argument for option #2 and I have to agree with him.

Well he ended up ordering the Energy take 5 classic. He just sold his Bose 10.2 and doesn't want towers again so Option #1 is out. He is not looking for that big theater sound most of us enjoy with our systems but a nice clear sound and thinks the Energy's will fit the bill. I liked the Jamo as well but think he will enjoy the Energy's too. The take 5 also have the same tweeter and driver size.

Even though it was noone's first choice, the Energy setup is still a nice one. I suspect he'll be pleased with it.

Erict,

the only reason I didn't say the Energys, was because the frequency response on them is 110 and 120 hz, so you have to crossover higher then you would want to to keep the bass from localizing. But they will sound good, its just you will know when the sound comes from the bass.

I think he will be hapy there are many people that enjoy the Take 5's.

If he's able to position the subwoofer up front close to the mains, won't it help with that problem?

To a point, but there will still be some directionality, think back to your HTiB days.

I did see that and think I will try a crossover at 110hz.
