Default Questions about a PSP

Alright, I have been in search for one for awhile now. A girl I work with got one for her husband, a PSP Slim, it's silver but I wish it was black to go with my PS3. Anyways, her husband modded the PSP. She said they d/l games and play them and what not. I explained to her why it is wrong, and it flew over her head.

She said they don't use it anymore, and would sell it to me. So, I have it, right now at my house. She said I could try it out if I liked it, I could buy it. It is modded, with a Gameboy Advance emulator as well.

So, I have some questions about it and I figured my friends here could help me out.

1. If I do an update for it from PSN or wherever the updates come from, will it disable it so it can't do anything because it's modded, or is there no updates that will do that? (I ask because Xbox Live does this and prevents systems from getting on Live)

2. I don't plan on downloading games, I rent from Gamefly, so is there an easy way to reverse the mod to prevent what I asked in questions 1 from happening?

3. I have tried to use it as remote play for my PS3, but it is not working. Is it because it is modded or should it work regardless?

4. If I buy it, it also comes with the Daxter PSP game and a UMD of Family Guy The Freakin' Sweet Collection. They didn't give me a price for buying it, they told me to name a price (Not for free though). How much is it worth in it's current state (modded)? I know it has been tampered with and warranty is voided, which it has probably ran out anyways.

Any other input would be appreciated.

Again, I must stress, I"AM AGAINST MODDING! I just want a PSP for remote play and a few games (God Of War for one).

You can look in the settings and see what firmware it was modded. The firmware will be different from the current one(like CFW vx.xx Mxx). Depending on which firmware it has, you can reload the original firmware if needed.

I bought a used PSP last year from ebay and I dind't know it came with a modded Firmware and I had to do a few google searches for the best way to re install the Official one...But you must be careful about flashing the PSP, if you do one wong step it would possibly Brick the Unit.

I would ask them to put the original back onto it before I even thought about buying it....

You can get them used for about 100.00 bucks, the pack she has was 179.00 or 189.00 new....Good Luck if I can help PM me if needed.

First of all, let me tell you that I don't know the answer to your question and, while I hate when people respond with an unrelated answer, I feel that I should remind you that E3 is next week.

Some analysts are expecting Sony to announce the PSP 2 at the show. Other rumors suggest an announcement at other shows in the fall.

My point being that you may want to wait until at least next week to see if they announce something before making a purchase.

Either way, good luck.

1. If you update the official firmware through the PSN or whatnot, it will get rid of the custom firmware on it, and run like a normal PSP. It won't break, and it won't do modded things anymore.

2. I'm starting to think I don't really know what you asked in question 1. I'm confused.

3. It should work regardless, unless it's on some really primitive custom firmware that didn't have all the features of regular firmware enabled. In most cases for the last several years, custom firmware includes every option of regular firmware, plus the added benefits of custom firmware.

4. I own the exact same PSP, and it came with those same two discs (Daxter and the Family Guy crap) and 4 other games (Vice City Stories, Medal of Honor, some jewel puzzle/RPG game, and one other that I forgot). I bought it used for $120 back in February '08 (a little over two years ago). I have no idea how much PSP's have depreciated in 2 years, but since the PSPGo was a complete failure, I think the regular PSPs are still somewhat in demand. Maybe $50-70 or so, as an offer (edit: it appears you got it for $20, which is even better). Whoever is selling it to you shouldn't expect you to pay more for it simply because it's modded, because that's not something you're interested in, and because modding it doesn't really require any sort of cost (at most just the cost of a battery that you soft-mod, but the battery still works as a battery, so you're not losing the use of a battery).

I'm not sure why you'd be so opposed to having a PSP with custom firmware, at least not until you rent a game that requires having a higher firmware than you are currently using, and requires you to update it via PSN (or wherever it comes from). If the person you are buying it from has the most recent custom firmware on it, then you'll be able to play all PSP games until the next major release that requires a firmware update comes along. I don't follow PSP game releases closely, but I imagine ModNationRacers is probably the biggest game to have been released in a while, and will be the biggest one for a while as well.

Having portable emulators is actually pretty useful, and if you own the games there's nothing to really feel guilty about. It's fairly simple to rip PS1 games onto your computer, and move the files onto your modded PSP, which is a LOT better (in terms of how the game plays, and battery life) than using remote play with a PS1 disc in the PS3.

PSP game rips is a completely separate issue, and I can see why you'd be opposed to that.

Sometimes Xbox Live does an update that bricks 360's that are modded from getting onto Xbox Live. I was just wondering if I update my PSP with the modded firmware, could the same thing happen?

I got the Remote Play working.

Yeah, I got it for $20 so I think that was a GREAT deal lol.

I own no PSone games anymore, except for a few I d/l on the PS Store for my PS3.

I only have the Daxter game for PSP.

I don't want to rip PSP games and was just wanting to get it back to normal. Thanks for the answers, to everyone who responded.

I'm jealous of that kind of a deal on a PSP, I would say anything under $100 is an awesome deal.

I just dusted mine off last week so I could start playing Dissidia. I've thought about hacking it so that I could transfer my UMDs to ISO and play them off of the memory stick. The load times are supposed to be a lot faster and it is supposed to increase battery life by playing off the stick.
