I'd go with the tv. Atleast you could experience HD cable and I'm sure you have a regular DVD player, most of them now if its a newer one it will upscale for you. I'd rather look and watch some real nice looking tv rather than spend $500 on a PS3 and have a tv that doesn't do it justice; would just be a waste to buy it without the tv. buying PS3 you wont notice a difference in quality until you get the tv, which costs a whole lot more than the PS3, so you might be looking at a few months down the road, unless of course your pockets swole lol, then just suck it up and buy both. definetly get the tv first IMHO. think of it this way:

1. You don't buy cars tires if you've only got a bicycle, right?
2. You don't buy the cheese if you can't get the chips, right?
3. You don't buy victoria seceret if you don't have a girl, right? (Maybe you do, I don't know haha jk)

buy the PS3 first, that's what I did. Plus, TV prices will drop sooner than PS3 prices so he can enjoy the PS3 now, and hold out for a good price on a TV. I will say though, I will never hook up my PS3 to a standard def television again. After upgrading to HD, gaming has never looked better.

He has like a 60 inch projection/dlp tv in his living room, not sure what kind but it supports 1080p. I keep telling him to buy the ps3 first because he can use the ps3 on that tv until he buys one for his room but he keeps insisting he wants a tv for his room first.

i bought my tv first and then 2 weeks after the system came out i bought it as well. i paid 800 for my ps3 two weeks later but it was the launch date ps3 which i got the best buy receipt for and it says nov 17 on it. the serial numbers and what not match the system and box. I mad sure of this when i saw the guy face to face and opened up the box checked everything on the receipt and was happy to know that it was the real mccoy .

p.s. no one got a better deal than i did for 800. HAHAHAHA. sorry

Default Tough one....

First your friends should consider what size TV he wants. It also depends on his age. Is he going off to college; will he be taking the TV with him to a dorm room. Or will he move out soon and use the TV in his own living room. These different scenarios make a HDTV $1000 or $1700 respectively. As for the here and now get the PS3 and use the current living room 1080p TV. On a side note, I took advantage of a sale at the beginning of last month at CC and BB. I got a friend a PS3 as 40 Sony 1080p LCD a second controller and a game for $2400. (And that was before the PS3 price break.) I got the deal at CC and then Price matched BB a week later and got $400 bucks back. They are bound to have another sale. CC has 24 hour sales; and BB will match or slash their price if you just mention going to Circuitry. Make deals. You don’t have to pay sticker price for a TV. It depends if the store is making there daily or monthly budget. The manager’s jobs depend on the sales, it like buying a car. Sorry if I went of topic a bit. Bottom line is - gets the PS3 and negotiate for the TV. Good Luck.

Oh ya and if your friend say’s “What about the 80 due out soon” show him the thread on changing out the PS3 hard drive

I want to get both, but it's hard to get my folks to switch from Dish Network to Direct TV, even when Dish sucks. Why? they are technically defficient, they get set in their ways. It was hard as it is trying to switch them from totaly horid analog cable service and VHS tapes to Dish and DVR (which at the time was a godsent, but I swear their pretty good service became less and less apealing as time went by). Seeing the Direct TV HD service every time i go to Circuit City and Best buy makes my drool.

I bought my HDTV first, and then while I was walking to the check out line, I saw a sign...

"PS3's are in Stock!"

This was at frys' so I said what the hell. I need a HD player, for my HDTV!

HDTV is not worth it if you don't have HD content.

Go Blu-Ray!

O wait I realize the real question.

Buy the PS3 first, becasue HDTV's will get better and cheaper. But definately buy both if you can.

Tell your friend to hurry up already!

If he's a gamer, get the ps3 first. If he has cable/sat where he can get HD programming, Id so go with the HDTV first.

Sorry I don't have a link for this, but about a month or to ago I read about a lawsuit (or complaint) filed by HDTV manufacturers where they are mandating minimum prices for their products, because they want to earn more for them. The article actually stated that the prices may climb for the holiday season and not to expect price drops. I would still say buy them both because there is no better way to enjoy HD than with a PS3!!!

HDTV by a longshot... it's bad enough that the PS3 doesn't have many games yet (until late Fall/Winter).

As for HDTV's going up in price... nah. Stabilizing for sure, but they're just trying to scare people into buying now. Same with PS3's and the whole 80gb/software emulation thing.

I'd say go with the TV definitely and get a good one. Don't be a cheapa$$ and get some knock-off brand like Insignia, vizio, etc. The TV can give you FOX, NBC, CBS, PBS, and ABC all in high-definition for free. And if you have cable services you can upgrade to HD and get even more channels in high-defiinition. Besides there isn't a whole lot out right now for the PS3 in terms of games, so I don't think playing one on a regular TV set will entertain you for that long.

i would definitely buy the ps3, one the price is 499 and when there gone it will be 599, and two you get 5 free blu-rays. and like others said tv prices will drop, sharp has already estimated a 25% decrease in price on lcds this coming year.

Link? Thinking you pulled it out of your a$$? No way 25% at all. Maybe 10%.

Buy the whatever you want first, but you'll want and love the HDTV over the PS3. I own both an xbox 360 and a PS3, and I'd smash either of them before I even thought of scratching my LCD.

I think owning a HDTV is the first priority. Then get some HD service from your cabe/sat provider, then add the ps3. Id take my HDTV over anything if I had to choose. You can get nice Vizio and Olevia LCD's for decent money now.
