Default Bizarre Receiver Issue

Hey Guys

so i hope someone can help shed some light on a problem i am having with my onkyo 605. over the last 3 days this issue has popped up.

I will be watching tv, playing games or watching a blu and the dialogue will dissapear from the program.

All of the other sounds from the fronts, center and the rears will still be playing fine but no dialogue, then the dialogue will come back. It cuts in an out. I have checked all connections and all is well, so i can only assume it is the 605. anyone ever heard of this before?

I have had a problem with sound cutting out when I watch "Lost", It used to happen on my Onkyo 805 and it happens on my SC-27. I wonder if this is the same issue you are having with your 605?

maybe so. one thing i just noticed.....if i turn up the volume really loud it is like the processor kicks in and the dialogue come back for a while, then after being at normal listening volume for a while, it cuts out again

That's weird. I had the 605 for over a year and never had anything like that happen. Fors used to have one also. I'll direct him to this thread to see if he ever experienced anything like that.

Bret....does the receiver have enough ventilation, it could be a heat issue thats causing the processor to shut down...

yes i think so. it is in an entertainment unit but it does not feel like it is running hot. i also have a couple of fans to keep my equipment cool..maybe i should try taking it out to see if i get a similar effect....

Have you switched out the center speaker with another one and see if this continues? Perhaps take one of your towers or surrounds and just hook it up to the center channel of the receiver and listen for other dialog drop-outs.......worth a try and easy to do...

Both good suggestions. OP when you're checking to see if your 605 feels hot, feel the top close to the back, especially toward the right side. When I had mine the top didn't get all that hot on the front, but you could cook on it toward the back. Also you want to make sure your fans are blowing hot air out of the cabinet rather than trying to pull air into it.

That is easier said than done......they have terrible customer service, but I think Brett is aware of this already.....

yeah onkyo are notoriously horrible when it comes to customer service! I have tried switching out the center and still have the issue. the receiver does not feel hot, and the fans are blowing out the hot air...still seems weird that when i crank the volume the dialogue comes back, but then the dialogue cuts out again! I think it is heading for the big theater in the sky!

I have to admit, I think it is something internal with the 605's circuitry...or in other words, it might be

Someone mentioned the Center Speaker Replacement, but you might also want to replace or swap the center speaker wire as well.

Also, check your receiver and see what you have set for "Dynamic Range Control" / "Night Mode" / or "Dialog Enhancement". Make sure they are all off as these could affect the processing for Dialogue, and might be the culprit.

My first instinct also involves the center speaker, as almost all dialogue comes from there. You could try leaving only the center speaker hooked up and see what happens. Try determining, when the dialogue cuts out, whether or not you're still hearing the surround effects coming from the center. If you're still hearing something, then it's most likely the receiver.

i had the same problem a few years ago with a 5.1 sony receiver. the center channel output just went out all of a sudden but the other 4 channels worked fine. may be time to fix your onkyo or upgrade to a new one.
