Default Issue: Onkyo receiver shutting off randomly

Any ideas?

Of course the book says, unplug and call Onkyo...

Basically randomly it just shuts off and the red power light blinks.

I am thinking of pulling it appart and seeing if there is dust or anything like that causing the issue.

The receiver is ice cold, not like it is overheating.

Help out...WIFE will kill me if I buy another one since I just bought the 5020.

I'd call them. Don't open up the unit as it may void your warranty. As far the dust issue you speak of...that's highly unlikely on a new unit.

I know it's a pain the have to wait, but I'd call them first before doing anything else.

Good luck!

I don't mean to be a bearer of bad news (although I am, I guess?) but from some of the other forums I have read about this when the heat issue has been ruled out....is they seem to think it is a bad circuit issue and the protection indicator will activate and shut off the Onkyo. I'd call them and do what John said, don't open the thing! Good luck and let us know what happens.

Sounds like the amp's output is shorted. Check for shorted speaker wires (or any wire) or wrong polarity. Do you have it connected to a power conditioner? Maybe try plugging it into a dedicated outlet if so.

Don't tear it apart, though you'll void the warranty.

This is an old Onkyo...801N...so no warranty on it now. So pulling it appart is not my worry.

I am going to hope it has something to do with a short. I did reformat the cables the other day and that is about when it started.

At least I am going to hope.

Polarity issue may be the cause here!

I'm betting that's the case. make sure none of the speaker cables are inadvertently touching each other, or another piece of metal, on the back of the receiver's terminal block. Carefully review each connection, because all it takes is a single strand to short everything out.

yea, ya gotta think it's the cables if this started happening when you re-arranged them. It's more than coincidence I think.

Got a few minutes and started tracing cables and found an issue.

My right main had both P and N pluged into P on the speaker, high and low.

Fixed it...HOPING that is all it is.

Will test in a few hours.

Thanks for the help so far...and crossing my fingers.

Not a matter of stupidity ....it's sometimes tough to pay attention to those small details, they get you every time, or at least they get me. I'm happy everything worked out!

You are very lucky that you did not short out the amp in the receiver. I did this several times on my Krell KAV-250a/3 power amp when 2 speaker leads touched once on the amp chasis and once on the center channel speaker. The latter was a very unfortunate and expensive accident (the first covered under warranty). The latter time there was a poof of smoke and it smelled burned and the amp stopped working.

I had the same thing happen to me at work. The receiver was ice cold, but it was shutting off on its own. It turned out to be the wrong polarity on one of the speakers as well. Easy fix.
