Default Onkyo 605 Shutting Off. WTF?

Hey guys,

I got my 605 today and set it up, however, I'm having a major issue.

I put in The Day After Tomorrow so I could enjoy DTS-HD MA. However, when it gets to the end of the Fox intro, the unit shuts off. I turn it back on, and it shuts off like a minute later (looks to be loud scenes doing it).

I went through and checked all my wiring. It's fine.

Also, I have a Popcorn Hour (media unit) on the 2nd HDMI and I just cranked up some songs (75+) and they worked flawlessly.

The problem has to be the PS3. Any ideas?

Talk about ruining a good day.

Oh, the unit was tested on a power strip and directly into the wall too. Same results.

I think there's a firmware update you need to get from onkyo... you can either take it to a service center for onkyo's or you can put an update disk in your dvd player, as long as the audio is hooked up through optical. Use the search, you should find a better answer there than mine....

Number one: Make sure the 605 can breathe, you need at least 4-6 inches above for proper heat dissapation. Sounds like it's going into protect mode because of heat. This is especially true if it's happening during loud, or a super dynamic part of the audio track, as the reciever is pushing more watts to the speakers it's heating up. I would see if that's your issue, put it on the ground away from any covers and try it again. As for the media unit, I don't belive the reciever has to do much with the audio from a 2 source, and especially if it's not at 8+MBS like a blu would be.

Good advice! I have not had the problem described above yet (I've watched a few movies), but I took the DVD player off of the top of the 605. I put it under the PS3 (a little awkward, but it works). I definitely don't want anything to happen to the receiver, so this will help ensure a long life.

I found the problem after extensive testing.

I kept playing the same scene over and over to eliminate possibilities.

I could watch the scene at 55 or less (VOL), but 60+ crashed the receiver.

After unplugging speakers one by one, I found out that my back left speaker was causing the crash. With it unplugged I could crank it to 90 and be just fine.

Unfortunately, this speak is in the ceiling and I'm not sure if it can be replaced (or how). So, I've unplugged it for now unless someone has any ideas how to limit the volume or whatever for just that speaker.

Everything else is great!

I've got The Day After Tomorrow cranking right now in DTS-HD MA.

I had a similar problem when I was new to Home Theatre. The first setup I had would konk out at a certain volume level. On one speaker only, one of the cables was a bit frayed and was touching the other cable. You couldn't even notice unless you looked closely.

My receiver even gave me a clue: "Chk Sp" it said on its read-out just prior to shutting off. That meant "Check Speaker wiring" but I didn't clue in!

My bro bought a new energy centre channel and he hooked up to his onkyo 806. His other speakers are cerwin vega's. He was doing to the testone to see if all the speakers were sounding properly. When it got to the left front speaker is sounded very low and the receiver shut down, and a red light started blinking. He unhooked all the speaker wires and unplugged the receiver for an hour becasue that's what the manual said to do. He plugged it back in , but he can't power it up. Is there a way to fix this. I don't know what are the ohms of the speakers. It seems the receiver is in protection mode.

Turn it back on without any speakers plugged into it. Does it fire up? If so, turn it off and start adding speakers, turning it on each time. That'll tell you the culprit.

If it doesn't fire up that first time, it's time to call service.

he took everything off and he unplugged it for an hour. Then he plugged back on, but nothing. According to the manual it says to crank the volume all the way up to see if the receiver stays on. I am not sure if he did that.
