Default not the same results

I first calibrated my speakers using the ypao on my yammy 663, i have the klipsch rc 62 and the rf 62s. Then i used the radio shack spl meter the results are not even close, totally different from each other, i want to say that i like the results better running the ypao. I thought the results would be somewhat close to each other. Which of the two are suppose to be more accurate, am i doing something wrong, looking for any and all opinions, thanks.

Were both microphones oriented the same way?

Did you set all speaker levels in the receiver to 0db, the run a test tone through you left front speaker only and adjust the volume knob on the receiver till your spl meter read 75db, now don't touch the volume knob and run a test tone in each of the other speakers one at a time and adjust the level (not the volume knob) for that speaker in the receiver until it reads 75db?

Are you using your SPL meter on C weighting and set to slow response? IIRC it defaults to A weighting and fast response. There's a sticky thread on the topic here:

I wonder if something's wrong with your SPL meter? Are you sure it has good batteries in it? I know it's a stupid, basic question, but just trying to cover all the bases.

if everything is good with my meter are you saying that the ypao calibration and the spl calibration should have similar results?

Maybe not 100% identical, but they should be pretty close. When I ran MCACC, and then tweaked with my meter, I was only making 1-2 dB changes.

It should be very close. When I ran YPAO I checked all the speakers from my seating position and they were all within 1-2db of each other.

One thing I forgot to ask is what doesn't sound good? Is it just the levels that don't sound good? Did you also check what the YPAO levels were at your seating position before you reset them with the spl meter at your seating position?

I agree with Steve and Eric, something is not right, the results should be similar. Do you have Netflix, where you could rent Avia setup disc. I know for sure that is authored correctly. That would rule out the test tones being wrong. Something could be wrong with either the SPL meter or the Yamaha microphone.

I wonder if the YPAO program changed your speaker size in the receiver set up. The auto calibration programs sometimes will change your mains from large to small even though you have a full range speaker. That will definitely impact the sound that you hear regardless of how the levels are calibrated.

Good point! But it sounds like the OP ran YPAO and then reset the levels to Odb and then set them up with the spl meter. He doesn't mention any other changes he made so he will need to confirm this.

Not to mention what the crossovers are set at for the low pass and high pass filters......a good starting point would be at 80Hz for the speakers (high pass filter) and 120Hz for the LPF of LFE for the sub (low pass filter).

Another good point Fors, but the Yamaha only has a HPF and a fixed 90hz LPF of LFE.

Well in my case, ypao always set my speakers to large, only the back spearkers to small, and also the crossover to 160hz, ypao also set my subwoofer really low, so when I use my meter I have to change all the settings diferent from the auto configeration, maybe that's the changes he's talking about, if he thinks ypao sounds better them he has to leave it like that.
