Default Blu-ray player for my shop....opinions please!!

well, my kids broke the dvd player i had in my shop so i decided to go blu so i can watch all of my movies while i'm working.

i'm a taxidermist on the weekends and like to have movies playing for background noise.

i bought the Sony BDP-S360 this morning @ wal-mart for $130. does anyone have any opinions on this unit???

i don't need anything other than to just play the movies.

any firmware issues w/it that i should know of??? they had 4 players for this price point.....magnavox, samsung, sony, and vizio.

i figured sony would be my best bet....i had a bad experience w/samsung and firmware updates previously so i avoided them.

are their any other units i s/b aware of or consider???

The Sony BDP-360 is a decent player. I had the BDP-560, which is basically just the wireless internet version. As you said you are just using it to play in the background. Operating menus is easy with Sony players and the BD quality is definitely solid. The only major concern I had is that it didn't display the BEST picture with upconverting standard DVDs on larger screen sizes. The remote is pretty cheap as well, but it decodes all HD audio tracks and firmware is easy to update. I'd say stick with the player since it's not being used for a primary optimal viewing experience.

my main concern is does sony have issues w/firmware updates....or lack there of....like samsung at all???

i had the Samsung BD-P1400 and they didn't keep up w/the firmware at all.....i don't want to run into the same issue w/a sony.

There generally aren't any issues with firmware updates (I used to own a Samsung BDP-2550 before my sony, and every update brought more issues). I have found that Sony is among the best out there for releasing updates and addressing issues. Sony has always been on top of the updates game, they release them relatively frequently and they're painless to carry out.

To be fair to Samsung, their older players have been just miserable with firmware. I have used a few of last year's models, and Samsung has definitely stepped up their game. I haven't encountered any problems pertaining to updates or playback in general since the early fall of '09. I know this doesn't necessarily pertain to your question, but I just thought I'd throw it out there.

sony makes good units, should not have any problems with the firmware. your other option is the panny line, like the bd-60 which i have. never had any issues with it and it is the same price as the sony

I got the S360 and I LOVE it. The only issue I have had with it is if I'm trying to play a DVD, sometimes if it is a lower budget movie maybe a low quality DVD, the player will make a funny kind of noise during the loading process. 99.9% of the time, it is FLAWLESS tho. With my experience with it, I would definitely buy another SONY

Good to know!!! Thanks for the input everyone!!!

I’ll hook it up 2nite before I start doing any work.

It’s only being hooked up to a 13” standard tv for now, like I said, it’s nothing too fancy, just to break up the monotony of “work”

And since it’s a blu-ray player, I’m gonna put the unit down inside of the cabinet the tv sits on to keep it a little cleaner than the last dvd player I had down there.

You cant go wrong with the Sony s360. I had the s350 and no issue with firmware or reliability.
