bd player and receiver codecs questions

im looking for a receiver for my ht, probably a 5.1 or 7.1., im new to some of this audio terminology

i have a panasonic dmp-bd60 which decodes dts-hd and true hd, so my question is when looking for a receiver to play these audio formats do i need to have a receiver that supports these as well? i have seen comments from people that say, "if you're bd player supports these, your receiver doesnt have to", so is this true, do the player and the receiver both have to decode to be able to hear them? am i missing something here?
