Default bd player and receiver codecs questions

im looking for a receiver for my ht, probably a 5.1 or 7.1., im new to some of this audio terminology

i have a panasonic dmp-bd60 which decodes dts-hd and true hd, so my question is when looking for a receiver to play these audio formats do i need to have a receiver that supports these as well? i have seen comments from people that say, "if you're bd player supports these, your receiver doesnt have to", so is this true, do the player and the receiver both have to decode to be able to hear them? am i missing something here?

thanks

If you have a BD player that decodes them, you won't need a receiver with a decoder as well (which saves you roughly $100). But, you need to ensure the receiver you buy is able to pass-through what your BD player outputs. Many receivers today can handle it, but it never hurts to ask.

Never use the term pass-through when trying to explain to new members what they should be looking for in a receiver!

(I know you meant well!)

...this can get someone very confused into buying the wrong product. "Pass-through" systems generally do not utilize HDMI Audio, instead an additional cable such as Optical is required.

What you should look for in a receiver is full HDMI functionality, both Audio and Video. The easiest way to find out is by the logo's on the front of the receiver. This more than likely indicates what codecs/formats it will process...

Plus, as Ferris said...it never hurts to ask!
