Default Cisco Says New Router to "Forever Change the Internet": The Question Is 'When?'

Cisco says their new technology you can download all movies ever made in 4 minutes.... Here is the link... Interesting, but I'll believe it when I see it....

No ISP will ever spend money to upgrade network infrastructure to support these types of speeds so this magic router is a pipe dream.

but interesting article

In the long run I think this would become a cheap tech. Interesting article.

This will not happen for along time.

It was the first post that got it right on the site linked. It will only be as fast as the last mile. So unitl we all get that upgraded I cannot see this happening.

This is all just hype right now. There have been talks about this level of core network speed for some time. Cisco just brought the technology to market first over a long haul. AT&T and Csco have been doing it over short runs since the about 2006/7. Also, if anyone is familiar with the underwater optical cabling paths, TAT-14 has had OC768 running over it for a couple years also. Ciena has also been demonstrating OC768 (40G) and 10GE for a while now. There are a couple other companies that also can do this, maybe Juniper and Fore Systems, too. I need to look into that.

I 100% agree that it means nothing until the "last mile" is upgraded. 100GB is right around the corner for my home though. We're supposed to have it over the summer.

Every technology becomes cheap at some point or an other. Buy Cisco stock now!

Me = jealous. We've got nothing like this in the works as far as I know — at least for consumers/non businesses. If you're getting 6Mbps over your cable internet line, you're doing quite well.

I pay for 18mbs fios and I don't see any reason to upgrade to anything else. I don't download movies that often. It's perfect for Netflix streaming and it's great for online gaming. Anything faster is unnecessary.

Comcast Xfinity. When I added Comcast Digital Voice, the installer and I started talking about it. He said they are testing it and should be released to the general public by the end of summer.

I'm currently getting 12-14 Mbps over my current Comcast Cable connection.

So you are talking aobut a shared connection. which right now all cable companies use. So you could get those speeds provided not too many people in your area are on at the sametime.

But this could be exactly what this new router is doing clearing some headroom for them to get speeds up on shared connections.

The biggest problem is the way telcos and cable companies look at things. I was in an area that was growing like mad. There were 10 new home develoments within 1 mile of me and more other than that. Of those 10 only 1 was getting fiber run to it since Verizon had signed a deal with them to include it in all new homes for them. Just think about the waste here, they put down copper instead of fiber to make all those homes ready. And I am sure this was not an issolated case. And with the cost of the copper they will not want to come back behind very soon to lay fiber.

That's pretty awesome. I just Googled that term (Comcast Xfinity), and found an article talking about it. Pretty sweet that they're able to offer something like this. I noticed it said they're doing their initial rollout in my general neck of the woods — the Bay Area — but we live in a somewhat technologically-deficient area, so unfortunately I couldn't see them including my county or anything within about 40 miles from me. I see San Jose as the only area near me that would get something like this, in the beginning anyway.

I was getting around 12 before I dropped Comcast. I hate them as a company but their internet service is the fastest around, except maybe for Fios which isn't available in my area.

I hover around 6 now with AT7T DSL.

The guy told me that the speed upgrade is coinciding with their DOCSIS 3.0 upgrade of the network.

I was just going to add the DOCSIS 3.0 modems, which are need for Shaw Nitro in my available, doesn't even require infrastructure upgrade. So for now, DOCSIS 3.0 will drive up speeds, and eventually the CISCO modem will be the norm.

I love the discussions about internet speeds, and how most think I'm nuts that games and hd downloads will be the norm only to see 100mb internet launched a month later, and announcements of technology like this.

I figured it was close to 10 yrs away, It's even closer.
