Default updating outdated reciever

Hey all,
Im getting ready to move into a new house and theliving room was prewired for surround from the people who lived there before and am looking to upgrade from an outdated 6yr old Technics reciever and AudioSource 8ohm speakers. Dont have a huge budget (like $300-$400 range). Ive heard good things about Onkyo. I see they have on their website some new HTiB's specifically the HT-S3300 thats coming out soon. Would that be a good, way to go? Also been looking at the HK AVR 254 with the decent prices on ebay (unless someones got one they want to get me at a better price ). Any thoughts or ideas would be appreciated

Brian

what gear do you have currently that you want to be able to use with this "new" receiver? i.e. cable box, blu-ray player. also, does the receiver you currently own have multichannel inputs and does it support component video in & out? if it does, you could save a little money by just getting a player that decodes onboard and go analog out that way you could still enjoy lossless audio and if the receiver supported component in & out you could still get at least 720p/1080i. if it has digital spdif or optical audio in then you could get an hd cable and get DD 5.1 audio & 720p/1080i video.

perhaps that could hold you over until you save for bigger & better things. of course, this all hinges on what the current receiver can do/accept.

the reciever is old and only has digital and the red/white connections, Im using a dish network hd vip box, ran hdmi to my tv a phillips 37in and the red/whites to reciever. I have a sony bdx-bp1 blu ray also hooked via hdmi with digital to the reciever, and a xbox360 via componet to tv and digital to reciever. Like i said the setups about 6yrs old now and starting to go want something with hd audio but cant afford the nice bug shiny toys so i was looking at the new onkyos cooming out and tat ht-s3300 looks right up my alley

What speakers are you using right now? IMO since you already have speakers that are rated for 8 ohms you should take your money and buy a new HD capable receiver. Then you can start replacing speakers and your subwoofer a little bit at a time. If you're interested in taking this approach I suggest you look at this Marantz SR5003 for $500.

I just clicked the link and it's working fine for me. I posted it at home from my iMac, and right now I'm on a Windows laptop at work, so totally different computer and everything. Maybe their site was down for a little while?? Anyway it's at accessories4less.com in case it still doesn't work for you.

And I'm doing great. How about you?

If you were to buy a receiver and keep using the speakers you have already you could piece together a new system over time and end up with a really great setup.
