Default When the Director should have yelled cut!

Watching the World is not Enough, can't help thinking the scene where Denise Richards is running up the stairs should have been reshot,I didn't realise movement could be badly acted until I saw this scene(don't get me wrong, love Denise Richards) just wish the Director had yelled cut!

This thread got me thinking about the scene in "The Jerk" when a film director is wearing those funky glasses, and didn't know when to yell "Cut!" just as a car ran off a cliff...

Carl Reiner:
"Let me show you a clip from my latest film where my faulty depth perception kept me from yelling "cut" at the right time.
Cut!
If I had yelled "cut" on time, those actors would be alive today".

Basically, IMHO directors should always cut out sex scenes, extreme lanuage, or gory moments in movies. Better yet, they shouldn't even film them in the first place. I get annoyed when directors film different versions of scenes for later TV viewings; if they'd be responsible to start with, they'd use those cuts, instead of trying to push the rating boundaries.

Agreed.

If the tone of the film is one of sex and gore then why cut it?

Responsible to whom? I get annoyed when watching a tv version of a film and seeing it butchered. If you object to what is onscreen, you should be 'responsible' and turn it off.

Not at all; I see next to no virtue in any form of "entertainment" that continually pushes every moral boundary, all for the sake of earning a profit. Many, many studies over the years have consistently proven that R-rated fare makes far less than any other release, and yet the filmmaking industry still feels the need to pack otherwise good stories with sex, gore, language, etc. What's even worse is that some people have become so desensitized that such content barely makes them blink. Honestly, I fail to grasp how anyone's life or mentality could be improved by seeing others curse each other, lustfully use each other, or carve people up like animals.

Well, being responsible to their mass audience and showing proper respect would be a decent start. Contrary to popular belief, there's lots of viewers who'd rather see a compelling, thoughtful story on-screen, without all the desperate "ratings fodder" and such.

People should be responsible for what they see and hear, yes...but the industry also needs to be responsible with what they produce. The weight of concern for content issues should be evenly divided among both the studios and the viewers, not on either one completely.

I respectfully disagree with you on this. First, not all films are looking to improve people's lives. R-rated content, such as sex, gore, language are all tools that can be used in telling a story. Certainly, there's countless example of exploitative use of all these things, but many times, a sex scene, violence/gore and language are all a part of establishing the setting, atmosphere and characters of a production.

As a basic example, how would Goodfellas be without the cursing? Removing the language may not dramatically alter the story being told, but it would certainly alter my perception of the characters. And which would be a more accurate representation of the way we'd expect these mob guys to actually talk?

Having said all that, I understand that some people just don't like such things, regardless of whether it's used exploitatively or not. My parents have very little tolerance for significant levels of cursing. To each their own.

Well, the first mistake you're making is that every movie is made as "entertainment", only out to make some profit.

Reading your comments, it seems as though you are the type of person that enjoys watching paint dry.

Seriously, I'm surprised that you didn't say, "directors should always cut out any type of conflict that could ever exist between any characters in the story." All of the elements you mentioned help to create and support the conflict that drive the stories being told. I would not have any interest in films if they excluded the elements you mentioned.

Quentin Tarantino cut his teeth viewing Exploitation movies quite a few of them Australian, most of them requiring the "Art of the Cut"(for budget reasons),some people now consider him one of the most important Directors working today, don't ever forget it's called showBUSINESS.
