Default Sony STR-DG720 Receiver Thread

Just went out and got a fantastic deal on this unit at best buy! Listed at $314 in the store, priced matched to circuit city who has it for $249, guy takes me to the front makes a mistake and tell the cashier circuit has it for $219! I pay $219 and i'm a happy chappy!

This receiver is awesome! Very easy set up, no on screen display but menu system is easy to navigate. Hooked everything up, set PS3 to LPCM and BAM this thing sounds awesome! Yay lossless audio at last!

If you have been looking for a budget receiver that will accept LPCM (not decode it, but accept it), do 7.1, and have 3 HDMI Inputs then this is the one for you! Sounds excellent and the price is amazing as well! anyway just thought i would drop my two cents on this receiver!

i agree...you know i was looking at the 820 but figured i would just save the extra $100 seeing as the ps3 can decode the hd audio! I had a sony STR-K900 before this and was impressed with it, sony makes pretty great equipment these days!

I recently purchased the Sony STR-DG720, as well. In my opinion, it's a great receiver for the price. I'm very happy with it.

The current settings were chosen by the auto-calibration microphone. I'm waiting for a HDMI cable from Monoprice (right now, my PS3 is connected via an optical cord) to calibrate my system manually. If you'd like the settings it's currently at, I'd be happy to give those to you.

Have you tried to calibrate it yourself? If so, what's your settings?

+1 Also, why did you not buy the B3000's or b1000's as rears? I have the SSF-5000, B1000, CN5000 and SW3000 and love it all. The sounds all match really well. I want to add another CN5000 to the rear for 6.1 when I upgrade to the 920 AVR. I was considering upgrade the floor speakers to the 6000's, but I may have to wait, got a look from the wife when I said that.

Glad you like the 720.

i love the 6000's! they are awesome speakers! The are crisp and clear, have nice bass to them i would highly rec them to anyone! I got a great deal on them! $130 a pair, which is a steal when you consider best buy sells the 5000's for $169 a pair.

I went with the insiginas as rears as i had heard wonderful things about them! They sound phenominal as well! They have been highly rated by various magazines as one of the best speakers in that price range! I like the 5000 center as well and too was thinking about getting another one for the 6.1

The 720 is just blowing my mind though! i watched cars today with my son and just could not get over how much better everything sounded, i heard things i had never heard before!

That is nice to here. I have been trying to figure what receiver to buy and that was on my short list. That or Marantz SR4001. I think that either way I will be a happy person too.

Honestly the 720 is great! Packs more than enough power, it looks nice and the lossless is great! For under $250 i honestly do not think you can go wrong with this thing!

Default Sony STR-DG720 opinions

I looked for this particular model number in the forums and didn't see the answer i was looking for soo.
I just want to find out user information about this receiver. I see its going on sale this weekend for 199.99 and just wanted to know if anyone had any experience with this unit.
Does it do Master and HD audio? Sony's website doesn't not state it directly but it does say it will do uncompressed audio. Sorry i know tvs but a little confused on the uncompressed audio. Other sites say it does but i dont think it does master and HD audio.
Please take no offense to this next set of statements. I do not want advise on what receiver i should buy. I also do not need the "sony sucks" people. I want to know from people who have had sony receivers good and bad. I have never had a sony. I have had pioneer, yamaha, and yes insigina. In my defence it was my first 6.1 receiver, i bought it for 20 bucks, and i fixed what was wrong with it.
Any help would be appreciated.

This receiver does not decode HD audio. If you have a player that decodes the audio (i.e. PS3, Sony BDP-S550, Panasonic DMP-BD35) then this player will receive and play the HD codecs. It is a good entry level receiver. I have the 920 and I would highly recommend it, and if this is anything like the 920 I think you will be more than happy.

As Jason states, it will not decode HD. FYI, the 820 will-as will the 920

I have this model (bought in in July I think). ITs a fantastic entry level receiver, as stated, for players that do the decoding like my PS3. The only thing I wish it had was a few more banana plug outputs rather than the standard lift clips. It only has banana plugs for L&R fronts I believe. But it has the lfe input, 3 hdmi inputs which I hear is pretty good at this price and <1% audio distortion. it also has the DMport which I managed to get free through my work for my ipod. I guess I'm trying to say I'd highly recommend it. Especially at $200!

I got it a month or so ago at Futureshop for $249 CAD. I have nothing but good things to say about it so far. The HD audio from my PS3 sounds great and the matrixing it uses to get 7.1 from other sources also sounds fantastic. I know there are alot of people on here who will tell you to save up and buy an Onkyo or a Yamaha or something, but I certainly have no regrets with the purchase.

nice entry level unit and good for a started receiver. I would try and at least get into the 820 but if cost is an issue, the 720 will get you by. GL

Thank you all for the help.
I do have a PS3 and would be using that for one of my sources. Im still a little confused. Sorry i know alot more about tvs than recievers. I know theres probably a million posts about his but.
So you state it will play the HD audio. Will it then do the uncompressed audio as well. I believe PCM is the term.
Lol im kinda bummed if i get this reciever got alot of work to do. I have a 6.1 reciever now and have in celing speakers. Like always i cut in only 3 holes in the back one for each rear and the rear center. I suppose i could get a Dual Tweeter speaker in the center and make it 7.1. Lol sorry im thinking while typing.
