United Kingdom hmv prices

was in hmv today here in london, and they had quantum of solace on sale for £35, yes, seriously, £35. Can't see many takers at that price.

The problem with HMV is that they can only charge what their supplier tells them to. I know a guy who is the manager at one of their stores and he was telling me that the supplier was wanting to up the price on certain BD titles but they were reluctant to as they werent selling at the price they were already at. Unfortunatley, they only have so much control over the pricing so your best bet would be to order online.

I can't figure for the life of me why people won't shop online?

I think they're extracting the urine quite honestly with their prices, and I don't believe for one minute the line about suppliers dictating those kind of prices. Other shops seem able to sell discs for more reasonable prices, so why can't HMV? It's the same with almost all their back catalogue stuff, while new releases are sometimes more reasonably priced - if it isn't in a sale, it isn't worth buying in HMV.

They're actually quite reasonably priced online, which just adds more emphasis on the absurdity of their store prices.

What other stores are there like HMV anymore. Yes you have supermarkets and places like Cash Converters but there are no shops that specialise in BD, DVD, CD's etc like HMV anymore.

It is very annoying, HMV usually has them for a fraction of the price online... but then it'll always be cheaper online when they are just kept in a warehouse, as opposed to a shop that needs to pay rent, hire employers etc The other day I went in and they had a few BDs I wanted in a 2 for £25 sale, which works out at £12.50 each, so that wasn't TOO bad. Hurt Locker, Let the Right One In and Trainspotting were all in it I think... and quite a few more. And some sale BDs like Planet Earth and Band of Brothers quite cheaply. But then they had Star Trek TOS for like, £70. But yeah, for the most part, Amazon, HMV.com and Play.com are the way to go.

However, not even 50p would induce me to pick up Quantum of Solace... :P

Thumbs down

I agree you can get the Undisputed Rocky Collection for £45 off amazon and it is £70 in HMV which is ridicoulous.

I have 3 different HMVs in my city centre and they often have significant price variations between each of those stores. Makes me wonder if the bds are usually incorrectly priced...

i think they have improved majorily in recent months.. some titles were as much as 50 euro (40 quid plus) but most new releases seem to be around 21.99 euro .. to 25.99 to 30 for some.. but i have noticed some bargains in there.. got the mummy trilogy the other day for 16.99 euro.. about 15.50 pounds.. thats about a fiver per disc which isnt bad for a blu-ray! i know i'd buy anything but they had the Santa Claus movie for 3.99..

I seriously don't understand how HMV can justify some of their prices.

I was in my local HMV yesterday and I seem to remember the complete Gavin and Stacey box set being £70 and another title I remember was The Day the Earth Stood Still which was £33.

I can understand if they have to put up their prices because of the cost in stocking their titles but it's beyond a joke now when you can get some of the titles at a fraction of the price online.

I was however quite surprised to find a few "2 for £25" which isn't too bad and there was even a few £10 releases but they need to reprice everything, not an odd two or three...

I was in the HMV in Glasgow at the weekend and actually found some bargains ... Black Book, Lady Vengeance, Sympathy for Mr Vengeance, Tale of Two Sisters ... all £12 each which is cheaper than Amazon. And yes I know they are cheaper online from HMV but I wanted them so didn't mind spending a little extra.

Ironman is the most ridiculous though, £35 they wanted for it!

To be fair high street retailers dont stand a chance.

They have to charge 17.5% VAT on all DVD/Blu purchases
whereas online retailers based outside the EU don’t.
The Channel Islands are outside the EU.

Its impossible to compete with this suicidal EU law.
Woolworths, Zavvi, Fopp, Head, Borders etc
have all gone bust.

I'm not sure that's the only reason they have gone bust :P

Online retailers will always be cheaper than high street stores for the fundamental reason that having a website and a warehouse incurs fewer costs than having physical shops. But you do raise a valid point, I didn't know about the VAT/Channel Islands thing, if true, then that makes sense.

Harking back to what I posted earlier, I don't understand how a HMV just five minutes walk away from the other can have completely diff. prices.

Yes, and they know that, and that's why they rip everyone off - because they know they've got a virtual monopoly for anything that's outside the top 10. It doesn't make it right.

I think asda is quite good when it comes to selling blu-rays as they have a 2 for 15quid section and i picked up reservior dogs & leon directors cut bargain.. And even the new titles such as UP i picked up for under 17quid the same price play.com might have been asking for. Some times asda do them cheaper.. It is a fact i think the retailers have been hit hard due to online shopping as its so much cheaper and shops are closing as online shops dont have to pay overheads.. I think in many many years to come retail will be the thing of the past as online is cheaper

I think you are bang on about the future of retail and it'll be a sad day when it happens. Outfits such as Asda have been the death of many bookstores and DVD retailers and the online stores have helped nail the coffin down, too.
Survival of the fittest, I guess. Same goes for electrical stores. "New TV, Sir? We have some but I don't know anything about them." They are happy to undercut stores of long-standing, but help, advice and ordering anything they don't stock went out the window when the supermarkets started dabbling.

the only reason their prices are so high as like some members have said before they have no real competition in terms of Blu Ray/DVD stores, apart from the supermarkets but in my eyes they don't really count
