I was reading a piece about 3D a couple of days ago, purportedly by someone who worked on 3D VR systems that were never put on sale and basically he claims 3D introduces an artifical depth perception that overrides the one in your brain. For most people the brain snaps back into real depth perception pretty quickly after a couple of hours in the cinema (altough I'd love to know if there are more accidents in car parks after 3D screenings) but nobody knows what effect prolonged exposure to artifical 3D will have. The AV companies have done zero research into potential long term effects. And it'll have a probably have a Videodrome signal too

I just thought I would post this: I'm not being an ALARMIST and I'm all for tech advances (hopefully, you can see that from my equipment) but I think the following was worthy of a separate thread. I hope you agree with me but I would also like to read your thoughts on this issue.
Here's what Marc Pesce found, the virtual reality expert who helped Sega to develop a 3D headset in the '90s: "He discovered that 'binocular dysphoria' is the price you pay for cheating the brain into imagining it sees depth cues on a flat surface. 'When the movie's over, and you take your glasses off, your brain is still ignoring all those depth perception cues' says Pesce; 'It'll come back to normal, eventually. Some people will snap right back. In others, it might take a few hours... this doesn't matter too much if you're going to see a movie in the theatre - though it could lead to a few prangs in the parking lot afterward - but it does matter hugely if it's something you'll be exposed to for hours a day, every day, via your television set.' Pesce's shocking conclusion is that 3DTV will either 'die a quiet death', or manufacturers will 'see the biggest class-action lawsuit in the planet's history, as millions of children around the world realize that their televisions permanently ruined their depth perception'" http://hcc.techradar.com/blogs/team-...shock-03-03-10 I guess my only conclusion from reading this and the Samsung warning posted elsewhere is have any of you heard of the company called TOYOTA! Some of you might think that Samsung is just protecting themselves in advance legally but clearly these WARNINGS should be taken seriously! Just MHO! So, If you want to know what I think - the 3D industry is trying to foster this technology on the home viewer and even the theater viewer when they already know that extensiive viewing of 3D is unhealthy. It's also clear to me from what I've seen from Toyota's actions or lack thereof that they only care about the bottom line, not the safety of the consumer! Personally, I hope 3D not only fails because it is a bad idea but also because it is unsafe! It is also clear to me, at least from what I've seen from Toyota's actions or lack thereof that these companies pushing 3D only care about the bottom line, not the safety of the consumer! Personally, I hope 3D fails big time and to use a Latin phrase "praemonitus, praemunitus" - "Forewarned is forearmed!" ![]() Last edited by rkolinski; 04-15-2010 at 09:35 AM. I went and seen Superman Returns in 3d a few years ago in IMAX and barely was able to walk out the theater and in that movie I just wore the glasses in certain parts of the movie not totally through. If people quit bootlegging every film out there.... Maybe these companies wouldn't be pushing a harder format that is harder to bootleg. |

To be fair, here is the full Australian article where they "approached several manufacturers for comment and most declined. However, Sony says it had a third party research institute study the impact of 3D viewing on people's health.
Sony says the researchers found no adverse consequences. What's more, the company says any affect to people's health from 3D depends on what they're watching, and content creators are now better at making images that are easier on the eyes." http://www.abc.net.au/pm/content/2010/s2820271.htm Of course Mark Pesce, who worked on worked on the virtual reality goggles that gaming manufacturer Sega hoped to introduce in the '90s said that "the company eventually abandoned the product, because of the potential harm it could cause to children who used it for hours on end." This is also in the above-referenced URL. Last edited by rkolinski; 04-15-2010 at 10:00 AM. Reason: to add more |

So if you cheated the brain into thinking it sees depth on a flat surface wouldn't it just be thinking that it is see what is normal in the world?
Or maybe since it knows that it is a flat surface it can't accept the fact that it is seeing depth even though that is what is perceived. Oh the conflict, our poor brains, maybe we can use this as an excuse to commit crimes. |

I'm only suggesting that one keep an open mind when it comes to this latest of technologies. And I think I read somewhere that in Korea at least, they hope to do away with glasses all together by 2015. However, by that time, they will have earned a lot without concern for the early adopter danger issues! |

During the 70s and 80s, people were still smoking cigarettes despite warnings from the Surgeon General that cigarette smoking is hazardous to your health. Only years later after fierce regulation, suing the tabacco companies, banning cigarette ads on TV, high taxes on buying cigarettes, forcing smokers to smoke outside of buildings or in designation areas within buildings, and the list goes on, did it finally make an impact. Yet still, some die hard smokers (no pun intended) blatantly ignore the warnings and live with the strick regulations on where you can or can't smoke and the stigma of smoking in public. It takes years for a product to be taken off the market due to health risk issues. There is no way it will happen before 3D TV goes mainstream. I certainly hope that it doesn't fail. We have blu-ray whether it be in 2D or 3D because the studio's biggest cash cow is from movies released at the box office. Most movies are made for the big screen box office runs. As long box office profits are high, we will continue to have movies for our 2D and 3D home theaters. 3D movies in commercial theaters will help keep the box office sales up. That is good for blu-ray. ![]() |
