Default Getting a Slim PS3 - Moving Files Question

So I'm moving on up from a old 40GB PS3 to the newer 120GB slims.

A few questions.

Is it possible to transfer game data to the new one so I wouldnt have to accomplish everything all over again?

How are trophies merged?

How does downloadable content work? Do I have to pay for it again if I want to use it on the old one still - or am I able to redownload it on the new one for free?

How does one sign up for PSN again on the old one, since I am giving it to my sister and she wants to create her own PSN account?

When you start up, it should ask if you already have an account.
As long as you are going to use the same PSN name, trophies and everything downloaded by that account will be there. Make sure you sync trophies with the server though. You will have to re-download purchased games, but you wont have to pay for them.

Since your old PS3 turns on, you'll probably want to do a data transfer (move your stuff from your old console to the new one). LINK

I just bought a new ps3 last week when my blu ray drive in my old one died.

I did the file transfer and it was really easy to do.

Does the file transfer move the files, or copy them?

Because I'm looking to copy them, not move them entirely...

DATA TRANSFER -> http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qM4anitZic0
NOTE: This will automatically format the HDD of the original PS3! Otherwise, a system back-up might be your other option. However, warning is given that many game save files are protected to keep from being "shared" in each scenario. I lost all of my Rock Band characters/progress and had to redownload ALL OF MY DLC after doing a back-up restore onto a new system that I had sent away for repairs.

Trophies are stored on your PSN account on the Sony servers. Once you log onto your account on the new PS3, the info will be merged with your new system.

If the DLC doesn't transfer over from the data transfer, you can easily download it all again without paying. Go into the PS Store and select the "View Downloads" option on the top right of the main page. From there, you can redownload anything that you have ever previously downloaded... so long as you are online WITH YOUR PSN ACCOUNT!

Using the same e-mail address and password from your existing account, you can easily link your account to the new system. I believe when you first try to sign in it will ask you if you already have an account or if you wish to create one.

Dang, I don't want lose the game files in transfer. Hrhm, might just have to re-beat all these games, then. Not a problem!

So then - I can NOT copy Game Saves from one PS3 to another? That's my main question.

Some games you can but some cannot be copied. Try testing them on a USB drive to see which ones can't be moved.

I really wish they made it so any Save files could be copied; Devs putting 'protections' on them makes no sense to me. I remember an exchange on this board where some ppl thought less of the PS2 because it used memory cards (as opposed to hard drive). My view has always been the opposite; this thread helps prove that too.

The games in question are Resistance 1, 2, Resident Evil 5, Dead Space...a few other less important ones like MoH: Airborne and LOTR: Conquest. I'll go give it a try.

Yeah, I don't understand it either and it seems pretty stupid (IMO). I guess they never expect you to move to a new PS3, use more than one or have to have one repaired.

Resistance 1 and 2 saves will copy I believe. Don't know about the others. Fastest way to check is to go to the Game Save folder and just try pressing -> Copy to a USB stick. If it works, they're not copy protected, if it doesn't you're SOL. There are only a few games that are copy-protected. There's also a thread floating around that lists all or many of the copy-protected games out.

Thanks Owa. Everything will copy, I just checked.

One more thing, how do you create a new PSN account on the old PS3?

On the far left of the XMB there is a "New User" icon. Just select that and you are well on your way.

Have you ever downloaded any games off the PSN store?

If so, your gonna need to deactivate your old ps3 and activate the new one.
