Default Help - moving Game utility files to external HDD

Just bought a Western Digital 500GB External HDD and need advice on how to move game utility data over to it
Some games have 4GB of data stored on my PS3 HDD and as its just a 40GB machine I have fast run out of room

I have moved my music, photo and game save data already, but need to move these large files

Any ideas?

I know with FAT32 you can only transfer files up to 4GB but most of the game utilities are under 4GB

Any help would be great

Run the Backup Utility under the System Options. Also its not a horrible idea to manually copy as well.

I have done a back up already and the manual copy in the game save utility section does not give you the option of copying - just delete or information

Don't worry about the Game Save Folder as it does allow you to copy. You are referring to the Game Data Folder which you are correct, doesn't allow you. Keep in mind that information is saved when you run the Backup, therefore its not necessary to copy that information over.

I assume you're meaning the actual game installs? I doubt it will actually let you copy that data, and even if it does it would probably just be useless space wasting as the install files will always have to be on the PS3 for the game to work. As far as I know the only way to get these things onto an external drive is to backup your entire PS3, but the only to access the information then would be to do a restore!

If it's space you need I would suggest backing up your PS3 onto your new external drive, buy a new bigger internal drive for the PS3 (and install it obviously ), then restore from the external back to the internal. Mine has a 250GB drive in it now and after installing all my games, plenty of mps'3 and videos, I still have around 140GB to play with.

Those are actually cache files theres no need to back those up or copy them anywhere they dont contain anything important, if you delete them and run the game for them again it will simply recreate that file.

Wowww, hold on there. There is more than just cache files there, if you have downloaded additional content for games like rock band or patches for games they will be in this data. So if you delete them you will need to re-download all of this again.

Run the backup, put a new larger hard drive in the PS3 and then run the restore its that simple, I upgraded to a 320 gig and it installed without any problems. Ater the restore everything was there.

That too of course but I always just re downloaded the individual packs again.
I started to say something about that then I stoped, I was getting at his mention of 4 or so gig files which sounded more like installed files so I made a unconscious decision to not mention it, im sorry I guess im tired..

Seeks coffee.
