Default Playing PAL content (DVD) on N. American PS3 possible

Well it's nothing new. I'm sure some of you discovered by now.

You simply have to rip DVD content (VOB) with any program say DVD decrypter. Rename the file extension from VOB to mpg. Then somehow transfer it to the PS3's HDD (whether thru memory stick or PSP - whatever). And it plays right on. And since PS3 had a firmware update where they say they upscale videos automatically stored in HDD, there's no need to worry 'bout them looking crummy when you play on HD TV.

Flaws though is that it isn't PAL trupseed so there are times when you notice a part of the clip speeds up, or should I say, tries to catch up in sync with the audio that's being played along with it.

I still find this handy if you have DVD music videos that are from region 2 PAL dvds.

My only concern is movies that outputs their audio in 5.1 surround sound. 'cause I had real life footage recorded in M2ts files with 5.1 surround mix. I transfered that video on the PS3 HDD. It played and all but the sound output was messed up. Everything was mushed on the right side (or left - can't remember). I even checked the info tag and it just says the codec was "Dolby Digital". No mention of Dolby digital 5.1 or anything. And to make sure, I played the same recorded footage from the disc it was recorded in. Played it and it outputs in fine 5.1 surround sound. That's on disc though and I assume obviously, it's meant to play fine on disc (and ya this is via ps3)

It's if as any video stored in PS3's HDD isn't meant to have 5.1 surround sound codec. But I'm not sure on this 'cause I know movies are sold on PSN. But do they have 5.1 surround sound?

I hope it was just the m2ts files that deals with this issue 'cause if this happens with PAL DVDs too, then it will affect whether I import this one movie I love from PAL region or not (Cat's don't dance).
