Default So I decided to get into Polks....

Possibly. Found out one of my next door neighbors is a die hard vintage audiophile (I'm talking tons of vintage gear) and he had a pair of these monster Polk SDA 2.3 TL's he'll sell me for 800.00 CAD.

These things are monsters, have to be about 150 pounds each and man do they sound good. I told him I'd think it over and get back to him. Anyone know anything about these?

The Polk SDAs are supposed to be just stellar performers! I have never had the pleasure of listening to them myself. How would you describe the sound?

When I first started researching Polk speakers, these were always very highly regarded.

The 2.3TL's were the flagship speakers in their day (and some say they still are). They were part of the SRS (Signature Reference Series) line. They were designed to be installed in a true left/right design. If I remember correctly, the photo shows that are placed in the correct positions.

Although I have never heard them, I have read that they can fill a room with ease. I would love to hear DSOTM on these bad boys. For $800 CDN, I would snatch them up in a heart beat for a two-channel setup.

RUN don't walk to your neighbors to buy them. If they are in the condition you say they are, you'll love them. Also, if you visit the Club Polk forum at www.polkaudio.com, I believe there are upgrades you can make to them to make them sound even better. That is, if your neighbor did not already make them.

That is a great price especially in the condition there in. Looks like they are minty. I frequent at polk audio forum and guys there swear by these speakers. These were top of the line polks when polk was a high end speaker maker. At 800 thats a steal. A guy on the polk forum just spent 1800 for his. If you get them visit the sites, many people have upgraded the tweets and the caps and resistors in them to make them sound even better. I want a pair but they are too big for my house right now. I hope you enjoy. All if you get them, I hope you have a powerful amp as they can take 750 rms apiece and I think they require a common ground amplifier.

Pretty amazing, not what I expected them to sound like at all. He had them running off of a vintage Luxman amp setup. Still trying to wrap my head around everything, was an overwhelming collection.

The one thing stuck in my mind is a pair of speakers he had with glass prism tweeters...

Stole that pic off the net, my Blackberry photos are kind of underexposed but condition wise they are on par with the photos above.

Go have a look at the Polk site and see if you're getting a good deal. SDA is really something special, the one drawback being they love power.

It's hard to describe the imaging... It's funny seeing people walking to check the center and rear speakers aren't going. LOL

I am quite familiar with those vintage Polk speakers. I have listened to them many times. I own a pair of vintage RTA 15-TL speakers that I purchased in 1991. They use the same type of drivers. Back then, Polk was a relatively high-end company and their speakers were sold in higher end specialty stores. Almost all their speakers were designed by Matthew Polk.

I believe the picture in your post shows the SDA-SRS 2.3TL (Signature Reference Series) speakers. The SRS speakers were top-of-the-line Polk speakers in mid 1980's to early 1990's. There was only one SRS model above the SDA-SRS 2.3TL and that was the SDA-SRS 1.2TL.

In my opinion, they sound better than a lot of speakers that are made today. If I had the room for more speakers, I would buy them.

SDA-SRS 1.2TL (U.S.$1,700 each):

SDA-SRS-2.3TL (U.S.$1,250 each):

SDA-SRS 31.TL (U.S.$1,000 each):

One of the best speakers I ever owned!!! I sold them when my mother-in-law took ill and she had to live with us for a while (R.I.P. she was like my own or even better). For $800.00 its a steal and these are REAL POLKS !!!!! Make sure you have the SDA cable - if you don't I can tell you how to make one. (Without the SDA cable they function like normal speakers - but with it - you get a holographic sound field)!

Yes, they do require a common ground amp. Vintage Yamaha M-80 power amps drive these things very well!

Flagship...well not quite. They are part of the flaship line, but there are 2 other speakers that top it, the 1.2 and the SDA/SRS Signature. I do agree however that this line (SDA Line) are the best speakers ever made by Matthew Polk!
