Default Before Blu-ray

I am sitting watching another Blu like I always do (The Princess and the Frog amazing!!) And it hit me! What did we think about our DVD's before Blu?
  1. Did we ever check a review of a DVD we were about to buy?
  2. Did we ever hear or say the phrase "blind buy"?
  3. Certainly never visited DVD.com
  4. Screenshot? What is that?

Wow how times have changed. How has Blu changed you?

For me, now, when I am watching a movie (Blu) for the firs time, I am thinking of what I am going to post on here. Blu-ray has really changed the way I look at movies.

Now just like a lot of you, even in the theater I think of how this will look on Blu.
Thoughts?

I used to feel the same way when DVD's first came out. I did check on some reviews of lesser known films before I bought them and visited some DVD (mostly horror) boards.

It's kind of a pain in the ass since it seems like you have to do more "work" before picking something up. With DVD, it was a given that it was going to be better than a VHS copy. I'm glad I've only recently gotten into Blu's, as I missed out on some crappy early encodes, it seems. Unfortunately, there's still stuff coming out on DVD that I know is nowhere near a Blu release and will end up getting, but at least it's cheap these days.

I wasn't into home video in the DVD days. Mostly saw movies in theaters and on TV.

Blus have actually made me buy movies instead of alternative means for DVDs. The huge difference in quality, video and picture, just made it worth it to finally own movies.

It's called dvdtalk.com. Folks have been acting like this for more than a decade with DVD.

For me, the big difference with Blu and this site is that I actually KNOW things before I purchase. Like if it has a slip, if it's cheaper somewhere else, etc. I never really got into the whole "OMG PQ has to be 100% or else" group. I figure if it's Blu, it's more than decent enough. And I know there's been some recalls (The Fifth Element for example), but come on, that's very few out of the total number of releases thus far.

Good point man, im only into blu's because i just got into the Home Theater thing so i wanted to feel that experience, and in addition blu rays were quite expensive so we need some type of community for deals and advice. Thats what i think.

Thank you Harry, I am 44 and always collected DVD's, but just thought that's what you get. Take it or leave it...No , just take it. At dvdtalk, what do they compare to, VHS?

I read up on as many reviews as I possibly could before purchasing DVD's, but reviews weren't always available. Fact of the matter IMO, is that DVD was so vastly superior to VHS and Laserdisc, you didn't really need to have comparisons...You knew that 99% of the time, you were going to get a much superior product.

Great thread! I love your questions, lol. You are very correct. Blu-Ray really has changed the way I look at movies as well. In many ways though, it really makes me appreciate movies more. When I began collecting BDs, I had an enormous DVD collection, and had become, in ways, tired of many of them. Blu-ray really re-invigorated my love for films and my collection, also this community is fantastic and really adds to the hobby and the appreciation for why we all love movies, especially when they look as good as this!

Agreed, DVD was the superior format. So even if it wasn't the greatest you knew it was the best they had to offer. Now I still have a laserdisc player and when I first got that I thought it was the greatest thing since sliced bread. Then DVDs came out and blew lasers out of the water. Yes I stil did blind buys, I even did that with lasers but less so since laserdiscs were more costly.
With blu-ray we have all been well informed about PQ and AQ and the televisions and sound systems are able to bring out all that is in a disc. We know what can be done with blus so we are more critical.
Even when we get into online disagreements about PQ and all it's due to our love of films. We are all part of the blu-ray community.

I was very much into dvd.

But blu-ray has made me more conscious and appreciative of things like film grain, lossless audio, correct color timing etc. It has been a huge learning experience and I've become even more insane about collecting and watching movies than I was back in the dvd days. This truly is the format I've been waiting for my whole life.

Wow how times have changed. How has Blu changed you?
1. No
2. Yes and no
3. Huh?
4. Didn't bother

In other words, I didn't buy many movies until I got into Blu-Ray. I have maybe 20 DVD's compared to 102 movies on Blu-Ray (leaving out 10 in my collection that are tv shows or concerts).

While I've always watched movies of course, Blu-Ray has made me even more of a movie fan. I watch a lot more movies now that I probably would have passed on before because of that. I'm glad that Blu-Ray has had a positive effect on me.

Wait a minute... you mean there was some form of movie technology that existed BEFORE Blu-Ray?
