Default When did giant, epic bosses start showing up in games?

I've been a PC guy for a long time. I got a PS3 at the end of 2009 along with the Gods of War collection. At the end of the first stage of GOW I, I was fighting the huge Hydra. It was epic. I was loving how huge the Hydra was. So I got to thinking: i don't think I've ever played a game that had bosses that size. And then there's Demons' Souls, which I can't wait to get.

So when did bosses of this magnitude start showing up in games?

Looks like God of War 3 isn't going to be any different!

The first game I remember with large bosses was Black Tiger" from 1987 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nDCYr1BzoMk

I missed that one! (Black tiger). Of course there is Sinistar too!

But I meant the more recent epic bosses that are much, much larger, you know.. taking up more than 1 screen height.

Just wondering when companies decided to go this big.

Demon attack from Imagic for the Intellivision... first it was like Space Invaders then after you beat a few levels, you'd float up higher and go up against a giant devilish looking ship with creepy music as you went up to face it.... that's the earliest I can think of...

Final Fantasy was one of the earliest that I remember. Even the old Castlevania and Mega Man games had epic boss battles.

I still say Metal Gear Solid took it to a whole other level though.

My first 'whoa' moment would probably be Serious Sam. (as far as big bosses go).

In more recent times though I would say Shadow of the Colossus started the HUGE recent boss trend which then translated to games like God of War, Demon's Souls, soon to be Nier, etc.

1942 I would suspect being the first to feature a end-of-level boss of magnitudes larger than anything you'd previously fought, also some of those take up more than a single screen.

That was released in 1984.

Last 10 yrs or so I'd say games/sereis like Devil May Cry or Shadow of the Colossus.

Before that I'd say Sonic, Contra or Castlevania

I think 'Big Bosses' have always been around since the start of gaming, but as the technology progresses and gets better the 'Big Bosses' get bigger.

Doesn't Bowser in Super Mario count? What about the giant brain thing in Gladius? That was in like '85. What about the giant ships in 1942? That came out in '84.

I remember playing a game called "Shadow of the Beast" on the Commodore Amiga around 1986 and there was a boss fight, which was essentially a foot!
