Default DVD region free PS3

So what are the chances of a firmware update ever coming out to make the DVD player in the PS3 region free? Good? Quite good? Or absolutely no chance?

I really hope someone will release something sometime soon.

I am originally from Europe and have quite a few foreign DVDs. I use an Oppo player to play them currently, but I would love to play them on my PS3.

In all honesty, I personally think this whole "region code" requirement is kinda outdated right now .... but thats just my opinion.

I have the same problem. I'm in South AFrica so I have a region 2 PS3 and I have a LOT of region 1 discs. I really don't want to have to purchase a seperate DVD player for those discs.

Is there like a website that Sony keeps checking where we can ask them to PLEASE make the DVD player in the PS3 region free?

I symphathize with you guys (I'm from Japan so I have quite a few DVDs I can't play on the PS3 as well) but with Sony being one of the major studios, I don't think they can do something to offend the other studios...at least not yet....

I'm hoping there will be an update to enable this in a few years when DVD is almost a thing of the past.

one can only hope

DVD region free would, I think, increase BD sales 10-fold. I for one wold buy more and I think it would be the final nail in the HD-DVD coffin.

Interesting.... ps3 is region A for blu-ray... soh that's like japan and the americas... yet these places are region 1 (NorthAm), 2(JP) and 4(SouthAm)... and Australia is also DVD region 4, and blu-ray region B, alongside europe... all blu-ray players ought to be at least dvd-region free... or we might as well have subregions... A1, A2, A4, B2, B4... etc... I am now having second thoughts on getting a ps3 on my next voyage to the states...

Here's hoping for a region-free PS3. The region lock only aggravates people who actually buy movies, since the PS3 happily accepts copied movies on DVDRs.

IF they make it region free they'll probably also need to make it run both PAL and NTSC DVD's.
