Plasma Over Fireplace - Picture Included

Well, I have responded to several threads about Plasmas and FP's over fireplaces. I have to to finally provide a picture of my own setup, until now.

Here it is. 42" Samsung on a full brick fireplace with an Onkyo HT setup. By some standards, not fancy at all. However it works for us and I like it. Believe it or not, I used no leveling device. I only measured. I measured like 10 billion times. I can tell you one thing, the tv can come down, but the bracket will NEVER be removed unless a larger tv is installed (unlikely). Everything is level and lined up perfectly. This picture makes it look off but its not



You can still see the speaker wires, however I will paint them white when I finish painting the fireplace, or I will replace with white wires. The only other thing I could not avoid was the wire track. You can probably see it, lower left of the TV. However, once painted I think it will be nearly invisible unless your looking for it. Hell, I have even stained the corner piece the same color as the wood so it blends. Let me tell you, it blends very nicely! I am happy with how it turned out. Please excuse the junk on the left. I had to break out the CyberHome dvd player so I can play some region 2 dvds Its just there temporary until the PS3 can do it.

What do you all think?

Looks nice. I am sure for me it would take some getting used to on the height of the tv, since I am used to viewing at eye level. I definitely don't envy you for having to deal with hanging it on brick though, that must have been an adventure; at least with regular walls, you can cut yourself some access and run your wiring inside the wall if you so choose, but with brick, wow, just wow.

Lol, it was a big adventure. It took about 2 hours to hang the thing. Most all of that time was dealing with the crappy drill bits that said they DID drill through concrete/brick. Yet, they kept puking out. They would drill fine for a little bit, but then stop and just turn and turn but not dig. I think I needed a drill that hammered and drilled at the same time. Oh well. Other than that, it was pretty simple to setup.

I also came up with some sweet ideas to hide the wires, but none of them panned out or would have been too time consuming. I hate the use of track, but in this case, I found some that was very low profile and blended damn well before painting. My only other alternative was to cout out about 2" of the brick face to make a channel for the wires and put back brick covers on top. This would have taken forever and probably comprised the safety of the fireplace.

I'm done with it now, but still have to do another few coats of the fireplace.

The viewing height is not bad at all. I actually never paid attention to it until you just said something. Lol. It works for the room nicely.

After using a projector for a few years - I guess I never considered why viewing height would be an issue for this kinds of setup.

Just a reminder to not actually use your fireplace in this setup as it currently is.

Fireplaces add an incredible amount of heat to plasma/lcd displays that are above them, which is why there must be a mantle between the fireplace and the display when fires are going. More damaging is the chemicals and soot that is released into the room from all wood fireplaces when lit.

You really won't have an issue if you are just using those candles in there.

But, it is going to be a real nightmare if you do light a fire often during the cooler months and watch TV. For most, the mantle is the perfect place to hide the wires as you can route out the mantle or run wiring right under the edge of the mantle to do a great job of hiding wires.

But, the setup does look good and paiting those wires the same color as the wall will definitely clean it all up.

Yeah. We never have and never will do raging fires. The fireplace is not smally by any means, but it is not nearly big enough to have fires of that magnitude in it.

We mainly burn those pre-fab logs. The man made ones. Or, we just use candles. The house is too huge to even think that fireplace will heat it by any means.

Didn't even notice the track...thought it was a ledge of sorts, maybe you should put one on the other side. even it out, make it look like a chair rail/ledge.

Not bad for someone like yourself who installed it yourself but I cant help seeing those ugly wires hanging there. No matter if you match paint them itll still be visible. Best if you hire a professional to conceal those wires. There are ways.

Yeah, its called caulk. I have to take the TV down to do it and I am not ready right now. Put the wire inside the groove of the brick, caulk some, paint some ans WOILA instant gone!
