Default 4:3 picture on plasma

I have a 55" Hitachi plasma and when i watch 4:3 i can either have light grey sidebars or black (although if i want black i have to go to the menu every time i turn it on and change it.) My question is, watching with the black sidebars, will I experience burn-in, or would it happen with either?

It will happen with either, ur best bet is to keep swicthing the bar color often, that might slow down the burn in.

the color of your bars are grey because it burns brighter than black. Black is as close to the lowest burn on a plasma which woudl increase you burn in problem. So thats why they use grey, it does not remove the problem but helps reduce. burn in is caused by other pixels near by not burning as hot or bright as the others around it ie: a sidebar. hope this helps you.

see if you can stretch the image, I know hitachi will let you not sure if you like that tho.

yeah, i can do that, it just drives me absolutely nuts though seeing a stretched image...i suppose that's better than burn-in though

i set mine to be stretched and it looks fine with me. my tv is a 32 inch screen but with my kind of tv even though it is widescreen it just doesn't look as good as stretched i guess because i dont have a huge screen just a big screen

To be precise, "Burn in" is a condition where a pixels are lit for such a long time that they leave a permanent shadow image on the screen.

The use of a gray is to help create even wear of your screen, more like prevent uneven "burn out".

If the bars are black, that portion of your plasma gets no wear and after a time, you might get a condition where you notice that the picture in the area where the black bars will look brighter and more vivid than the area in your 4:3 portion.

This problem doesn't exist with LCDs though some old generation LCDs do exhibit a condition similar to burn in where crystals that have their states set on for a prolonged period of time become more sluggish, but that condition is reversible.

I get some weird stuff with my piece o' junk Sampo 50" plasma all the time. Startup the PS3 and get their white on black screens and before you know it, there is some image retention going on. Play the games for a bit or watch some TV and it quickly goes away. The PS2, since it didn't properly fill the 16:9 screen created quite a bit of uneven wear, but just watching TV in stretch mode (or HD) eventually evened things up.

What you don't want is to JUST watch 4:3, and you want to turn on some of the anti-burn-in measures, such as pixel orbiting.

The biggest issue is using a PC on a plasma and leaving it there for a few days. May sound crazy, but I've seen more than a few plasmas used in commercial facilities that were wrecked in just a few weeks due to this type of neglect.

Burn-in and uneven wear is a real problem especially if you have your picture contrast turned way up.

Most consumer sets are shipped with "contrast" set at 100 by default and that just makes it worse.

Game consoles and computers can cause burn-ins if you are not careful, the Windows Start button is always there, your desktop image, the Mac's menu bar, static images, especially if they are white or bright, is the enemy.
