Default Warner DVD's in DVD/Blu Ray combos

Ok, so quickie question here. Is the DVD/Digital copy disc that is included in Warners Blu/DC/DVD combo packs the same encode as the retail version??? Cuz the last 2 or 3 (Valentines Day, Sherlock Holmes) I've looked at look like total GARBAGE (even for a dvd ) with 384 kbps audio and the pq is shockingly bad. Are doing a separate cheapo encode for these packs and the retail dvd is better or is Warner doing chincy encodes in general for their dvd's???

(valentines day was especially horrid for the pq, MASSIVE mpeg2 compression artifacts almost turning it unwatchable)

lol, nah, I wasn't going that in depth, I was just curious if anyone had a chance to compare the retail with the DVD in the "combo packs" I was just so shocked at the quality that I was wondering if they were including sub-par discs with these (especially since the audio for these have all been 384 kbps audio instead of the standard 448

Are you talking about the DVD, or are you still trying to watch the DC on a big screen?

Well here's the thing. Some BD Combo Packs that I've bought actually have the DC in the actual DVD itself. So, I think it's obvious that the DVD will have to be compressed to fit the DC. Hence, the possible horrible quality.

Then again, I'm not entirely sure if these DVDs/DCs are from Warner.

3.87 gigs isnt even a dual layer dvd. Thats pretty crappy if theyre dumbing down the pq on dvd. Every big release should be on a dual layer dvd even if the company would rather you buy the bluray. 3.87 is very compressed.

those are the ones we're talking about. Warner is the only one that has the DC and DVD on the same disc. But the thing is the disc is only 5.7 gigs TOTAL including the dvd files and the DC. so if they did compress, HOLY SH!T. or else this is just typical warner doing crap encodes on their dvds. I literally hadn't seen an encode this bad since their early dvd days back in the the 90's

oh it's a dual layer disc. it's 3.87 gigs for the DVD video portion and 1.83 gigs for the Digital copy.
I know the disc doesn't have any special features which is how I assumed that they would fit the Digital copy on the disc. I would wonder how cost effective it would be to do a separate encode for this disc rather than just slap a retail encode with a digital copy on the disc (being that 90% of movies without special features have MORE than enough room to add the DC to the disc without compressing.

I seem to remember there being a thread about this a while back. The DVD copies are NOT the same encodes that you get when you purchase the DVD by itself.

It is indeed true that these are not the same encodes as their regular DVD counterparts, but I have already watched two of them (The Blind Side and Sherlock Holmes) and had nothing to complain about. Maybe they could have looked slightly better, but in the end, I'd rather have the DVD copies included this way than not at all. As long as the PQ is satisfactory, I'm fine, as I'm more worried about PQ on Blu-ray than DVD. The main thing missing are special features, but I have the Blu-ray for that.

wow, that's actually amusing. so it looks like Warner just did a really bad encoding job for this flick.

I think that's probably why WB does this. They figure the people buying the Blu-ray aren't going to care as much about the PQ on the DVD as they are on the Blu-ray. And then they think the people watching the DVD instead of the Blu-ray aren't going to care as much about the PQ in general since they're watching the DVD instead of the Blu-ray.

Uhh, now I kinda feel guilty for re-selling the DVD copy that came with my Avatar BR on Amazon Marketplace... :x
That one didn't have a digital copy on the disc, though, so maybe it wasn't too bad...

That one is probably the same as the DVD version since it's from Fox and not WB.

Which is exactly why I don't see the big deal. It may matter more to other people, and I respect that, but I'll still always rather have the DVD included this way than not at all since I can still get some use out of it.
