![]() ![]() Ok, so technically the anniversary was yesterday, but who cares? The original Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie was released on March 30th, 1990. I remember seeing it in theaters, so it's crazy to think it's been 20 years. Maybe I'll watch it later. It is, after all, the best TMNT movie ever made. |

I thought this was the greatest entertainment-related thing I'd ever experienced when I saw it in theaters. And then the arcade game came out not long after...omg. That game was godlike for a 10-11 year old MCT, and it still is fun to play on MAME. The movie, though? Not so much. I did love Shredder, though.
TMNT is the bawlz, in any case. Especially the very first Eastman/Laird B&W series from 84/85. The Leonardo/Foot Clan Christmas Day rooftop massacre still blows my mind when I read it every once in a while. Pretty cool they paid homage to it in the kiddie live action movie, although it was Raphael instead of Leo and wasn't nearly as graphic as the comic version (which is understandable). |

Warning: Grammar Nazi fast approaching!
In the movies, they spelled Michaelangelo with the 'a' in there. I'm not sure if it started as a mistake, and then they just ran with it, but I learned this after seeing a poster a few years ago for the animated movie coming out (they had one for each character). I think it was Michelangelo for the TV series. Since I don't read many comics, and I haven't read those early E&L ones in years, I don't remember how it's spelled in those. It's something that continues to annoy me, because it looks wrong when the 'a' is used, even if it's technically right. |

Oh and I remember I had all their toys too! I loved the Pizza Oven that threw pizza (disc) out of the oven.
![]() I hated waking up Saturday morning @ 6:30 just to catch the cartoon. That was the only time they would show it. ![]() |

I saw this in theaters, I would have been about 4 1/2 than lol, but I don't remember much until TMNT2 came out and after leaving the theater I was sitting in the back of our 76 Dodge Panel van, playing with my turtles van acting out everything I just saw. Until dad slammed on the breaks and me and my van launched forward with the turtle van cracking the back of dad's head..........not a fun ride home afterwards.....

Wow...its hard to elaborate on what's already been written, but I'm going to try anyway.
Twenty years...amazing...simply amazing that it's been this long. I remember seeing this in the theater as a 9-year-old kid, and being completely blown away by it. My favorite characters in the film were Mikey and Casey; the "park scene" with Raphael is a classic moment, and Mikey's phone call with the Domino's guy makes me smile every time ("...No anchovies, and I mean no anchovies. You put anchovies on this thing and you're in big trouble, okay?"). ![]() As for the rest of the film, I still watch it every few months, and it just stuns me how well its held up over the years. The look and "feel" of the picture still work, and the characters are so very memorable (funeral for a pizza, anyone?). How many films from 1990 can we honestly describe as being as enjoyable now as they were then? Not many, in my opinion. As for the live-action sequels, I never paid close attention to them as a kid, so I didn't catch their "dumbed-down" aspects until much later. My biggest disappointment was the replacement of Judith Hoag with Paige Turco, because Hoag was such a great April, and I really wanted to see more of her future with Casey in the other films. Sadly, that was almost obliterated, as Casey didn't even appear in "Secret of the Ooze", and was shunted to the background for "Turtles in Time". Elias did play a great alternate role in the third film, though; I liked his character of "Whit" a lot. The 2007 film was good, too, though I think they tried to do too much at once. I wasn't expecting to like Sarah's take on April, but I did, and Chris Evans as Casey made me laugh, albeit in a good way. The voices for the Turtles were top-notch; I loved how Leonardo was done. Mako rocked as Splinter ("I'll be watching my stories"), and it was cool hearing Patrick Stewart as "Max Winters". The animation blew the door off in terms of its scope, and overall the film was a wonderful ride. I'm looking forward to the upcoming "live reboot"; I just hope it doesn't suck. |
