Default Warner Bros Buys Into THE BATTLE OF MIDWAY - Will Make It A $200M 3D Epic!

Warner Bros Buys Into THE BATTLE OF MIDWAY - Will Make It A $200M 3D Epic!

Sunday, August 29, 2010

An interesting rumor (out of usually reliable Deadline) has it that Warner Bros is buying a pitch from Bruce C. McKenna (THE PACIFIC) for a World War II Pacific theater epic THE BATTLE OF MIDWAY. Apparently it is being fast tracked and McKenna will deliver a script to the studio within 8 weeks.

$200 million is the likely price tag for the war movie that focuses on the turning point of WWII where Japan lost 4 of its extremely important aircraft carriers.

Personally, I am a WWII buff, though admittedly more focused on the European theater. Midway is truly one of the great battles of all time, from before it happened (breaking codes, etc) to its aftermath. Sun Tzu will tell you battles are won before they are fought: "Now the reason the enlightened prince and the wise general conquer the enemy whenever they move and their achievements surpass those of ordinary men is foreknowledge."

I liked the 1976 version entitled MIDWAY with Charlton Heston, Henry Fonda, James Coburn and Hal Holdbrook, (a heckuva lineup) and just watched it this past month in fact.

Should be an excellent recreation, especially in 3D! Thanks Tim.

WWII carrier naval battles in 3D.

This gives me GOOSEBUMPS.

Just do not let 'Michael Bay' anywhere near this please.

For the movie. For it being in 3D.

Yeah, it's bad enough they are doing it in 3D. Hopefully, if they follow through on that they'll at least film it in 3D and not apply it after.

I have only seen ONE MOVIE in this format, so I am still somewhat on the fence about 3D.

However, an epic WWII naval battle filmed in NATIVE 3D with a well respected director, has fantastic possibilities if done properly.

And I will be there with bells on.

I am not necessarily a WWII "buff", but I find that particular war to be particularly fascinating!

My eyes always strain when i watch a movie in 3D but sometimes my girlfriend drags me to a 3D showing and not the 2D. The one and only movie i have seen and did not HATE the 3D was Avatar and even then my eyes started to hurt by the end.

I am a big time history buff and a HUGE WWII freak, so desperate battles involving several types of military planes, shattered ships and extreme drama has definitely got my attention.

Well, I do admit that when I walked out of the theater after AVATAR was over I had a headache, so next time I will have to remember to bring along some aspirin.

And I do realize that for some people 3D will have an even worse affect on them, but for now I believe that Sci-Fi/Fantasy and some historical war films are perfect testbeds for this new style of 3D.

War movies can be so much more than just mindless destruction and entertainment. I'd rather see another Saving Private Ryan, Iwo Jima, Stalingrad, Enemy at the Gates, Black Book.....than another Pearl Harbor any day of the week.

The 3D is fine to me, as long as it's in it from the start of the project and not just tacked on and as long as we get a choice between 3D and 2D.

Crossing my fingers for this project to get a worthy director.

Enough of the movies depicting WWI or WWII "GROUND WARS" , it's time we come to see some heroics of our men in action, out at "SEA," during WWII.

If Warner Bros. could aquire the likes of Casey Affleck, Billy Crudup, Terrence Howard, Hugh Jackman, Hugh Laurie, Jesse Metcalfe, Bill Pullman, Kurt Russell, Liev Schreiber, Donnie Wahlberg, and Tom Welling, this movie could be as epic as SAVING PRIVATE RYAN.

The winter monsoon in that region is characterized by consistent heavy clouds and rainfall that make operations difficult.

I've always loved this painting, even though it embarks the Vietnam Era, I've always thought of it as time standing still, during WWII, everytime I see it.

Suhweet!

Also, can you imagine with today's CGI technology if they made the largest naval battle ever, "The Battle of Leyte Gulf" in its entirety????

Man...my woofers and tweeters would get a serious workout from all those Battleship's and Cruiser's guns once it would make it to BD.

And I would have no windows left either!

Why.This would be the perfect project for Mr. Bay!Atleast here his explosions is part of a natural setting for 'em

And I don't get the hate for 3D movies. This will probably be a popcorn movie since it's done in 3D,so just go along for the rideWhere I live we get a choice to either watch 'em in 3D or regular 2D-mostly that is.

$200 million budget? Will likely be a bomb--of the box office kind. (That is, unless James Cameron is directing; then it'll be bigger than Titanic & Avatar put together. )

(Edit: Anyone remember Pearl Harbor? The film, not the battle.)
