Default BD sales declining?

Hi, have you seen this figure from Sony at CEDIA?

http://www.dailytech.com/article.aspx?newsid=8764

How come? Is this because of Fox MIA during several months?

I really hope and I'm actually confident that the blue line will rise again in the next 3 months, but it's worrying nonetheless.

Wouldn't be concerned since the decline is the same for HD-DVD as well. If you look at the end of the graph the two decline almost at the exact same rate. So HD formats in general are declining. Plus look at the Blu-ray release schedule. During the sharp decline there have been no "big" releases to really spur sales. So all in all I wouldn't be too concerned.

your face is worrying...jk . Thats not what it looks like. The sales are still strong as ever 2:1 every week. You want to see something scary look at hd-dvd's sales, now thats some bad revenue.

Default Standalone sales #'s are meaningless - hd-dvd keeps on spinning

Why does standalone matter so much w/ 6,000,000 PS3s sold worldwide. Stop living in denial people. Many people buy the PS3 instead of the blu-ray standalone because it is the same price as the cheapest blu standalone player. It's like getting a Playstation for free, then add in the fact that its got built in wi-fi, internet browsing, and free online play, it only makes sense to purchase the PS3 over a standalone to watch blu-rays.
Follow this link and read the paragraph under the remote control picture. http://reviews.cnet.com/game-accesso...g=nefdprod.rev CNET uses PS3s as the high def reference to test many of the HDTVs they review. MANY people check out Cnet before purchasing electronics.

And whats funny about this whole standalone player BS Toshiba keeps trying to feed the general consumer...they don't even include the PS3 in their numbers for comparison!

That's because everyone wants to hate the PS3. I got mine on launch and all I have heard since I got it was what a waste of money. Its a forced purchase of a blu-ray player. A) an elite is $479 B) crapy hd-dvd add on $199. $700 dollars for that compared to $499 for a ps3 ($649 with tax when i got mine). People just don't wanna admit that it is a better console, it offers more than any console ever has for the money. I love the "forced" blu-ray. I now have 43 blu-ray movies and couldn't be happier.

I agree with you on this, but the figure I linked to is not about Players but movies...that's why I'm a little worried.

Both HD-DVD and Blu-ray tend to rise and fall in tandem, just that Blu-ray has greater numbers in total.
Nothing to see here, move along.

At least Sony has the balls to show it's not perfect. Toshiba would just spin it their way somehow.

Plus I wouldn't be worried. Alot of movies are coming out soon, especially all the summer movies beginning with Fantastic Four 2 in early Oct.

Also, the PS3 failure rate is around less than 2%. I believe the last time i checked the 360 has close to a 60% failure rate. Hence the reason for that giant billions of dollar warranty extension.

I suspect some of the reason for this with BOTH formats is that the first adopters are the most hard core, who will repurchase lots of movies in high def. We know there are people on this forum with hundreds of BDs, but the average number of discs per HD DVD owner is just 7. So early on you get a lot of sales to these really keen early adopters, but after then, they only buy new releases, because they've got all the titles they want. The people picking up players later on in the lifecycle are less hard core, and less likely to repurchase existing titles in high def.

So what happens over time is that the market becomes ever more focused on new releases, as we've seen with the release of 300, where its sales form a major % of annual sales for the two formats. Once major BD exclusive titles such as Spiderman 3, Pirates 3, Live Free or Die Hard, Simpsons movie etc hit the shelves, we'll see BD selling major quantities, and the titles coming along later this year will drive further player purchases, causing a huge surge in movie sales.

you shouldn't be worried about it. there are reasons contributing to the decline. 1. being fox. since they haven't released anything for sometime. 2. would be not that many great releases during that period.
