Default Impressions of your upscaled DVDs on PS3

For those of you with ps3, what dvds were you impressed with now that the ps3 upscales? And which ones weren't you impressed with?

I've checked out many dvds and some I was impressed with, others not so much.

Star Wars epsidoe III looks great as do the original trilogy( special edition).

LOTR Extended Editions looks amazing as did Nemo and the Incredibles.

Gladiator extended edition looked good too

IMO Braveheart didn't look all that great and neither did the Predator

Thundercats looked ok, as did Voltron.

oh and my ps2 games looked pretty bad. I tried Madden 07 and Smackdown vs Raw 2007 and both looked very "cloudy."

Upscaling's tricky. Most SD discs look better but there are some that already have a fairly flat soft pic and upscaling does those pups no favours. With those discs, you're actually better running in 480p and kiscking ip your sharpness control to get a little detail in my opinion.

I rented Smokin' Aces and Deja-Vu this week, and both were just stunning.

This was a huge update for the PS3 in terms of playing DVDs. I sampled some last night, and was pretty impressed.

The wife wanted to watch Titanic last night so I popped it in the PS3. The PQ was much better using my PS3 that my old Sony DVD upscaler.

I was really impressed watching Children of Men upscaled to 1080i. Since Universal doesn't have the since to release their films on BD this is the next best thing.

I guess recent films on DVD work good with the upscaling.

Just finished Broadcast News - one of my all time favorite movies - and can't say theres any difference.

Which setting are you guys using on the Upscaling option? "Normal"? "Full Screen"?

What about the other options? Whites?

I'm sure this is affected by the quality of upscaling in your set. Those that don't see a difference probably have decent upscaling.

Myself, I have an older set which does a 480i->540p upconversion and leaves things rather dull and with lots of jaggies.

Most movies look prettey good. If i had a full 1080p tv I might notice more of a difference. Cartoons like Futurama and Southpark now look as sharp as Ultimate Avengers does on blu ray. Reno 911 looks a little better, but little to no change in older fullframe TV shows like Married With Children.
As far as settings, I have mine set to normal. It saves me from having to change the aspect of my tv for fullframe and back when I'm done.
All in all, it meets my expectations.

I don't see a difference. I'm glad others are really seeing a difference though. I like the PS2 games which can be sized down and are no longer stretched out.

Are there any 1080p viewers impressed by this firmware?

Do the PS2 games look better after being upscaled to 1080p? I know some people aren't really impressed by the upscaling on PS1/PS2 games but does it look better compared to not being upscaled?

The only PS2 i've put into the PS3 since the 1.8 update is SOCOM Combined Assault. I thought the images were much more smoother and less jagged. As far as movies, The Incredibles look excellent upscaled. POTC 2 had some improvements. The scene I looked at was the part when he was about to be cooked by the cannibals. I paused the scene when he was tied up with a think rope and turned the upscaler on and off a few times. The rope threads were much more defined upscaled, his shirt was whiter and brighter too.

Default batman begins

i popped in batman begins and noticed a difference...previously it seemed a little dark but now its better and more vibrant colors and not as grainy as before in my opinion..and until the blu-ray version this is the next best option

Man on Fire looked pretty damn good upscaled, dark areas looked a little crushed in some scenes but I was impressed overall!

First disc I tried was Spider-man Superbit and it looked AWESOME! I was very impressed with the upscaling and prefer it to my LG upscaling dvd player...by a lot. Seriously test the superbits...amazing.

With GOW2 did you still select progressive and widescreen in the game options or did you leave it as normal and have the system do it?
