Default HD DVD compatibility with PS3?

Hi - New to the forum.

Can you play HD DVD's in the PS3 or is it only Blue-Ray discs?

Thanks in advance.

the ps3 does not have any compatibility with HD DVD - only Blu-ray when you're talking of HD optical media.

Lol, try playing a HD-DVD in the PS3 and you get a message saying either, "are you ****ing serious", or most likly one saying, "this disc will self destruct in 10 seconds, boil to reset timer"

Well... welcome to the forums.
I hate to say it but that question shows how new you are.
PS3s do not play HD-DVDs. HD-DVDs and Blu-ray discs are incompatible with each other. There are some players coming out that can run both but they are very expensive and tend to run the Blu-ray discs better (missing the chipset or HD-DVD's HDi playback).
PS3 plays Blu-ray, DVD, CD, PS1, PS2, and PS3 format discs. PS3 games are actually Blu-ray discs, just like PS2 games were DVD discs. The PS3 is the best selling Blu-ray player on the market but it is uncertain what percent of those owners use the PS3 for movies or just games, or both.

Hope this helps.

Your PS3 will flop around like a fish out of water and say "YOU DID THIS TO ME!" then nothing but silence!

It does not support HD-DVD, however, maybe with some work you maybe able to get the 360 HD-DVD addon connected to the USB port and have a linux HD player, probably not for the timid

And I believe it also plays the smaller 8cm(?) optical discs...it will auto center it when you slip it in. I *assume* that is to support camcorders etc although I haven't done it myself - maybe someone else can confirm.
