I have a PS3 and may get a PSP. I am surprised that I have not easily been able to find any info on what sort of compatibility there is between the two. So, here are a bunch of questions. If anyone can help me undersand the issue better, I thank you.
Can I swap pictures, video, etc. between the two with the wireless connection? I know I can connect to the Internet with a PSP and wireless router, but right now, my computer and PS3 are connected using Ethernet cable, and I’d like to keep it that way since I’m a bandwidth pig. So, can I connect to the Internet with my PSP by going “through” my PS3’s cable, while my PSP is still communicating wirelessly with the PS3? I suppose that for it to do this, the PS3 would essentially have to act as a router itself, but maybe it can, I don’t know. If that won’t work, can anyone give me any suggestion about how I might connect up my three devices without spending too much cash or slowing down my computer and PS3’s connection to the Internet. (I get a lovely 10 gigs downstream.) Finally – can you you put PS3 savegames on your PSP, so you could take them with you to other places? I’m not super-technical, but I should be able to understand any A/V setup options you may know about. Thanks again. |

I have them both as well. While I don't have my PS3 connected via ethernet (mines wireless), I am not sure as to if it's possible to transfer pics and other files wirelessly. To get pictures onto my PS3, I used the USB cable (used for charging your controller on your PS3) and plugged it into the port on the front of my PSP and you are able to copy pictures or music to it that way. That's how I did it. Not sure if there are other methods though. Hope that helps you a little bit. |

... PSP as remote control for PS3 (via wifi connection). Full navigation of PS3 XMB on the PSP screen so you can control music, arrange DLs without switching on your HDTV (which isn't needed for those functions).
Also perhaps to replace traditional-style Bluetooth remote for use in complete darkness (home theatre) when you can't see the buttons. Last edited by Teazle; 10-05-2007 at 08:27 PM. |

Well, I got my PSP - now to answer my question as best I can. I ordered a new router which has enough ethernet ports for the rest of my network, plus a wireless access point for the PSP. It is possible, according to the on screen instructions, to synch the PSP to the PS3 via a (newly) byzantine process. On the old PSP, this could apparently be done with USB cable alone. Now, you need to "register" the PSP with the USB cable, and then, connect both devices to the Internet and log on to Sony and request, (through BOTH of them - separately logged on-) the synching up of the two. So, for all practical purposes, you can't use the the PS3 to go online with the PSP, since they both need to already be online before you can synch them. Grats to Sony for making that about 12 times harder than it needed to be.
In most ways, I couldn't be happier with my PSP. Light enough I can play it on the treadmill at the gym, and TV out is a lot of fun. I still haven't tried much of what can supposedly be done with the PSP. I never had Homebrew (which will not run on the Slim and Light) so I don't know what I missed. People say you can check your e-mail with it - but maybe no longer. I Presume it still plays MP3s. Anyway, with FF Tactics, plus FF VII Crisis Core and Disgaea right around the corner, not to mention Dissidia on the horizon, I'll certainly be in gamer heaven. |

1. USB cable is for transferring content like music etc - at this point. 2. There was an "old" manual process of creating a wi-fi connection to get the PSP and PS3 to work for intranet remote play. Basically you had to know what you were doing and setup a connection etc..not something for the average consumer I'm afraid. It now creates connections for you etc. See next point 3. They've now made step 2 "automatic" I believe when you register the PSP with the PS3 for intranet remote play over "local" wi-fi. 4. The registering in step 3 plus being signed into the PSN I believe is also used so that the PSP and that PS3 can find each other from anywhere in the world without users needing to know how to setup all this stuff. Also means if ip's etc change the info should be automagically up to date and not need re-configuring by users..seems quite ingenious to me actually. The remote play mode should allow you to use the PS3''s browser to surf content that displays on your PSP. The PS Store reformats automatically when your doing that and you can start download's etc...in effect the PSP is just streaming your PS3 screen and the PS3 disables functionality while in remote play so it doesn't show up on the PSP. It's been awhile so I may be off a little bit but that should be "pretty" close.. P.S. They added the ability to re-map buttons on the PSP while in remote play to better match what you would need for playing PS3 games since there is not a 1 to 1 mapping. Not sure if it applies only to games or other areas. Last edited by ps3andlovinit; 10-14-2007 at 04:55 PM. Reason: added more info |

I use the remote play in the house mostly to listen to music from the PS3 while the HDTV is being used for other purposes like a TV show etc.. Last edited by ps3andlovinit; 10-14-2007 at 08:36 PM. Reason: post above not below error |

So far, I have been able to connect as long as I am at home, using a private network. But even from home, my PSP has not been able to "find" my PS3 when I try to connect over the Internet.

From my job I can't access my PS3 using the PSP due to the firewall my job uses to prevent certain pages from being accessed. One of those is "games and electronics" which sucks. When I'm at my mom's house, or any house that has a Wifi connection, I can access my PS3 which is linked to my PC-file server using the Meda Server option and can access all my pictures, songs, and ripped movies. This is an awesome feature as I carry the Component cable. At my mom's house I've put it on her TV and we've watched a few episodes of THe Simpsons/Family guy (Bitrate is a bit low, wished the PSP-Slim came with 802.11g not b, oh well). At the library its awesome cuz I can access my songs and not have to keep editing the content on my 2GB memory stick. You can access the internet on the PSP through the PS3's browser if you remote connect, but there is a noticeable lag and if you are at home there is no pointing in doing this honestly haha. If you click the Triangle I think it give syou the option to copy files over, I haven't tried it buy will if you want me to. Remote Play is a great feature and I wish Sony will release more games that take advantage of this feature. I'd love to be able to access a PS1 game if I leave it in the drive. Here is to hoping for future firmware features. I can connect to my PS3 through remote play online on the PSP even when at home (I do this in my bedroom as I didn't run a cable line, nor wanted to install a small PC but the PSP does a great job hooking it up to my switch and then displaying my file server content on the TV.) Check your router settings, it might be set to block all outside pings/connections. Last edited by railven; 10-17-2007 at 01:49 AM. |

Does anyone know how to fix this problem? I bought my PSP to connect to my LocationFree Base Station and my PS3 when I'm not home, but I haven't got it to work yet. Thanks! |

Wow, the PSP is the perfect companion to my PS3. I now have a truly multimedia hub. Remote Play is awesome. I decrypt my DVDs, encode them in MP4 format and put them on my PS3 and with remote play I can see them anywhere in the world!
