Default PS3 Audio Question

Hi There,

Ive recently got myself a PS3 and HDTV, connected via HDMI.

im looking into getin a A/V reciver to enjoy the HD-sound stored on the amazing Blu-Ray disks.
My question is, what aido formats does the PS3 decode?

For example if a BluRay disk is encoded in Dolby-HD will i need a AV reciver that accepts this sound and decodes it or will the ps3 do that for me?

Thanks.

The PS3 can decode standard Dolby Digital, DTS and Dolby TrueHD. As well as pass Uncompressed PCM.

All you need is an HDMI (1.1 or higher) reciever capable of multichannel Linear PCM to listen to the new Lossless audio codecs (with the exception of DTS-HD MA which NO player can decode or send).

These are some lower priced recievers that will work, and you may even find them cheaper somewhere else, just to give you an idea to start.

Out of this list I would recomend the Onkyo TX-SR605 or the Yamaha RX-V661.

Any particular price range youre looking for?

Actuially i was trying to use HDMI and TOSLINK at the same time so if i want to use the tv sound for mp3 playback i can and when watching bd's / gaming i can grab my dd /dts headphones that decode all 5.1 channels.

Being upstairs i'd annoy others with a dedicated surround however in the rec
room downstairs i have an older sony 5.1 reciever and am waiting until the
recievers can upconvert conponent to hdmi and decode dts MA and all the new HD audio standards. Might be in the market around april 08..i think that should be about right.

What i was talking about is how currently when you go to audio settings you
can only do 1 thing at a time whereas i want to enable at least HDMI and
TOSLINK so i can seamlessly switch between them as i see fit.

Sony would have to update the firmware for this to work...thanks for trying
to help though.

ummm. I think you responded to the wrong thread.

and also, there are recievers out NOW that convert component to 1080p HDMI and can decode DTS-HD MA. (Onkyo TX-SR805 off the top of the dome )

Hi there thanks for the advice, im here in the UK and looking to keep the price down as much as i can, sorry im a complete audio noob, if i got the reciver you suggested (Onkyo 605), when i plug the ps3 HDMI in and put HDMI back to the TV will it still be 1080p as my tv is full hd?
Also will i need certain speakers to get the HD sound?
Also dose this reciver accept LPCM if a Blu-Rau disk is encoded using LPCM will it work?

Also just to clarify as i hate handing over money that is not needed lol will the PS3 itself decode:

DTS-HD Master Audio 6.1
DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1
DTS-HD Master Audio 5.0
DTS-HD 7.1
DTS-HD 5.1
PCM 7.1
PCM 6.1
PCM 5.1
PCM 5.0
Dolby TrueHD 5.1
Dolby Digital Plus 5.1 EX
Dolby Digital Plus 5.1
DTS-ES Matrix 6.1
Dolby Digital 5.1 EX
Dolby Digital 5.1
Dolby Digital 3.0
Dolby Digital 2.0
Dolby Digital Stereo
Dolby Digital Mono

If it will please could you let me know, if not please could you state what ones wont so then i know if i would like that audio format i could buy a A/V reciver that decodes it, if for example the PS3 decodes all of them itself i pursume all i need is a A/V reciver that has HDMI in and HDMI out?

Thanks again
