Default Ghost in the Shell 2.0 announced

http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/news...anese-theaters

Quote:
Mamoru Oshii's first Ghost in the Shell cyberspace film will return to five Japanese theaters in an enhanced Ghost in the Shell 2.0 edition on July 12. The new edition will include new computer graphics and digital effects for some scenes and a reunion of most of the cast members for a new 6.1 surround sound recording. Academy-Award-winning sound mixer/editor Randy Thom (Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence, The Incredibles, The Right Stuff) has overseen the new soundtrack with Kenji Kawai's original music and a final mix that has been produced at Thom and Lucas Digital's Skywalker Sound studio in California.
Let the cries for the original version begin (though this is Oshii approved). I assume Manga Entertainment will be talking about this, and what is sure to also be one of their first Blu-ray releases at AnimeExpo or Otakon.

WOW this is exciting info. Excuse me for being uninformed but when is Anime Expo? And do we have a "projected" release date in the U.S.?

This is the original GITS? It's not the Innocence movie, is it? I would gladly see the updated version, Updated Akira wouldn't hurt either

Well, I already have the original Japanese import, so I'm all for a new 'enhanced' version. Good news.

While the new audio interests me, I have to say this feels a little "Star Wars Special Edition" to me-- i.e. taking something that wasn't broken and fixing it in such a way as to be less good. Some of the comparison shots on the Japanese website did not impress me. I don't want to see classic hand drawn stuff turned into CG. And the one shot of the chief is so dark you can barely see anything. Ugh. I'd much rather see the original completely and properly (i.e. not the first blu-ray release) remastered.

Ghost in the Shell coming to IMAX theaters in 4K September 17, 2021

Quote:
Neo-noir cyberpunk thriller Ghost in the Shell is coming to IMAX theaters across the United States, Japan, the United Kingdom, Canada, and other select markets for the first time on Sept. 17. Distributors Bandai and Lionsgate said Friday that Ghost in the Shell will screen in 4K using IMAX’s DMR digital remastering process at approximately 150 locations.

Based on the influential manga of the same name, Ghost in the Shell is set in 2029 Japan and follows Motoko Kusanagi, a cyborg security officer, as she hunts down a mysterious hacker. Directed by Mamoru Oshii, the 1995 anime film was originally a box office failure, but became a cult classic through home media release. Recently, the movie got a 4K release for its 25th anniversary.

Ghost in the Shell has been adapted many times over the years, including a controversial 2017 American live-action film that cast Scarlett Johansson and other white actors in lead roles. There is also a sequel series on Netflix, which picks up after the events of the 2002 anime series based on the manga.

Figured this was the right thread since the OP is talking about a theatrical re-run.
