Default Ghost in the Shell 2.0 12/08

"Well, well. I certainly didn’t expect this to come so fast. We first got word of the upcoming Ghost in the Shell 2.0 - a re-animated version of Mamoru Oshii’s classic scifi anime - back in June and while it will certainly be released here in North America in due course fans aren’t going to have to wait very long at all to lay their hands on an English friendly version. Regular reader and Oshii expert Brian Ruh just dropped a note pointing out that Japanese DVD and Blu-Ray editions have already been announced for release in December and that it will include an English language audio track. These will go nicely with the just released Japanese Blu Ray discs of the Stand Alone Complex movies and the upcoming Blu Ray of Innocence, all of which are also English friendly

I've read the Japanese GitS 2.0 has no English Sub or Dub. The original GitS Blu-ray release (the same one from last year) comes boxed with GitS 2.0 LE, and that has the English Sub/Dub. 2.0 is not English friendly.

I realize everyone has a preference, I far prefer the native language and then subtitles. It is a rare anime series/movie that has a decent English track. So, as long as there are English Subtitles, this is something to look forward to. Though, I already own two different versions of the first movie now.

cant wait for these to come out and i too watch the movies with english subtitles. English voices usually don't match up the characters too well.

I will be all over Ghost in the Shell! I listen to the English dubs the first few times then it's original audio.

im one of the rare anime fans who only listen to the dub track if there is just a Japanese audio track i just read the manga because reading manga is easier then reading subtitles(subtitles usually move to fast for me to read)

According to AV Watch, there will be no English dub or subtitles for the 2.0 version on the Japanese release.

Meh, there are quite a few series that have great dubs. GITS is one of them. Heat guy J, cowboy bebop, samurai champloo. Lots of good dubs. Pretty rare for a newer series to have a pretty bad dub. Only 2 fairly recent series i'd call terrible are Naruto and Initial D. Naruto had some bad casting choices for a few characters and Initial D's dub is just terrible. Some decent voice actors, but they couldn't save that series from the terrible rewrite.

This is very good news! I have always loved GIS and the GIS series. GIS is the second anime i ever saw and is my favorite. Can't wait for it on BLU. Ninja Scroll was my first one, hope that comes out on BLU also.

I will still take Ruh's word for it until it is released.
All of the GITS releases have had english subs so far, including the ultimate version of Innocence and the SAC movies.
Not having it on 2.0 makes no sense.

I can think of two reasons. Either WB (who are one of the producers) plans to get the rights for domestic distribution and asked them not to put subtitles on to prevent importation, or Bandai Entertainment plans to release a domestic version, and wants to prevent importers from buying the Japanese version (although this one would be weird - especially with their plans to try and ship their anime simultaneously worldwide). AV Watch is usually pretty accurate about specs prior to release. I don't recall them being wrong about this kind of thing off the top of my head.

Hopefully this will be cleared up before release. From what I understand, there is very little dialog change in 2.0, so it shouldn't be too hard to put English subs on it. The English dub is another story.

I already have my copy on pre-order, so unless it is cleared up by then, or someone posts the specs before me, I will gladly post the status of English subs.

The 2 disc special edition SD I have is in DTS 5.1 Japanese but seriously lacks in dynamics. The whole soundtrack needs an overhaul.

I like hand drawn animation. Does it really warrant a CG overhaul? Granted, I haven't seen the BD release of the original so maybe it did, but this seems a bit revisionist for me. I don't want them to Lucas things up.

As far as English subs/dubs I'd expect they might hold back so they can license it out. Who knows.
