Default @johnno1986 about CEDIA (from Insiders thread)

I'm not supposed to answer questions there as it is questions to forum approved industry insiders.

Click to find out about CEDIA expo.

I hope you are looking at the front page and see this pop up.

G'day mate,

Just left Melbourne about a week ago. I saw very little blu-ray and holy-jeez, PS3s "on sale" for almost $1K Australian. Is it true that players there have to be region-free? A local told me that it was the law for DVD.

Cheers,

G'day CAB,

I'm not too sure about the law saying they have to be region free. I would have to check that. As for the cost of the PS3, I know and boy does it suck. Everything is expensive here. The amount of Blu-ray media is also lacking but word is we are going to start getting quite abit more soon, which will be nice. Hope I helped.

Cheers.

Find out if you are region free. If so, I'll send you a PM next time I'm heading you way and you can let me know what titles you want me to stow in my carry-on. We'll get you hooked up and for cheap! Won't cost me much at all to ship the stuff once I'm there.

G'day CAB,

It would appear as though our ACCC (Australian Competition and Consumer Commission) feels that DVD players that enforce region coding may violate the Trade Practices Act. So I would say that players over here must be able to play DVDs (and I guess BD/HD DVD) from all regions. Hope that helps.

Cheers.

Australia is a vicious cycle

The selection stinks so people import

Because people import, the selection stinks

I find what I miss most when I travel abroad is the immediate availability of anything I want. I was in Sweden for 8 weeks one time and ordered an Apple Extreme Express WAP the first week I was there and when I left, I stopped by the shop to cancel the order that was still on backorder! Oh and I miss massive grocery stores and wet-aged beef.

Please please please... for the love of God. Don't let Sony and/or the BDA disappoint at CEDIA. I know it may be too late... but give me a break. They are just giving it away to Micro$oft.

Do you really believe the BDA is giving anything away? I guess that comes from being on the outside looking in.
