I'm no marketing expert, but in this "format war" I have to think that there will be some big name BDs coming out the same day that Transformers and Shrek 3 are released on HD.
The Die Hard films (1-4) currently don't have a release date, so those are possible to stacked up against one of the two. Maybe there will be titles that haven't been revealed yet. Any predictions? |

Wow, I don't know how I missed the news that the first two won't have PCM. Bummer. You had me scared though, I thought it was just going to be Dolby Digital. At least it's TrueHD. Still, that's VERY unusual for a Sony release. |

Right now, there isn't a newer movie that the BDA could put out that would compete with Transformers, it's sad to say. Spider-man is overpriced so you're losing customers there plus a lot of people don't want to buy the third one which is the only way you could get the first two. Transformers outperformed Pirates domestically and there may not be a big enough BD market overseas to compete with sales here. But I still don't think people are going to spend basically $330 (the player and the movie) to watch Transformers. I wouldn't worry about BD having to keep pace with hd dud.

The dates for the big summer blockbusters should be chosen for the DVDs, not the high definition discs. And just like with releasing at theaters, it doesn't make sense to have two huge blockbusters release the same day. They will tend to take money away from each other (make the total pie between them smaller). There are only so many Tuesdays in the holiday season, so I expect some $100 million+ earners to release on DVD the same day, but the $300 million+ movies shouldn't be going against each other. With movies in different genres it might make sense to put two very successful movies against each other, like maybe Superbad on the same day as Transformers if that wouldn't make the theatrical window too short for Superbad, but I don't expect to see it.
The Blu-ray side might want to try to pick some BD only releases (not the day-and-date stuff where the DVD sales are the important factor) for these days though. --Darin |

Transformers was retarded. Fate of the world depends on a metal square from space. Hellraiser had a better plot than this dribble. The robots were way too over the top. Talked like 10 year old boys. The only thing that kept my attention was Megan Fox (yum). Could have watched Baywatch instead for similar acting and plotline creativity.

Shrek 3 I was really dissapointed with, so no loss there. Transformers was really good, but it's not what I call a must have film to me. Pirates 3 was not as good as the first 1, on par with 2, but I really enjoyed that, so will be adding it to my collection. Spidey 3, not sure with this one. Was ok, but will buy it, to complete the trilogy.

As for Transformers, November 20th and 27th are currently looking quite open so I assume it's going to be one of those two. I wish some BD studio would take a stand and blast them out of the sky with something big though, just for the sake of PR value. If Fox is willing to do this, I, Robot and Independency Day would do quite well to compete for the same demographic, and ID4 is currently running against POTC3 so they might want to move it anyway. enjoy gandalf ![]() |

Fox just put that date on their site because they will release sometime in November, they just don't know when yet. Maybe they're waiting for a release date for Tranformers? |
