I really can't see how thwy can win. We talk about low priced HDDVD players but no one is talking about HDTV's. Remember not to many people have them, and the ones that do have the excess money. It is still not for the every day joe.

Your right, however once the standard in the US is switched to digital (~2009 timeframe), more and more will be purchasing new HDTV's instead of shelling out $$$ for a tabletop box converter (converts digital signals to analog). Once this happens a great deal of folks will be looking for players that can take advantage of the HDTV's and those will either be bluray or hd-dvd. We don't have a long time here, we are probably talking about 18 mos. before the standard changes and most consumers would like to be 'setup" way before this time. So the bluray and hd-dvd camps (especially for this holiday season) are trying to get critical mass and a foothold to be able to "peddle their wares" prior to the digital turn-over. In addition HDTV prices are really starting to come down and as such are not seen as much of a "luxury item" as they used to be.

Well up here in Canada, I'd say a very large % of TVs being sold now are HDTVs... all the larger tube TVs have vanished, it's hard to find one above 27" anymore.
And you'd also be surprised at the number of people on welfare that I know who have HDTVs... they've gotten so cheap lately. |

Ironically my grocery store sells a 32" tube TV for $450...
But it's a huge waste of money, you can see the horizontal lines splitting the picture up all over, it's kinda fuzzy too... they obviously had to cut many corners to make it so cheap! My brother just got a 37" Viewsonic LCD for like $750.... hard to compete with that! |
